Position Summary: UAF's Community and Technical College has an immediate opening for a Term Assistant Professor of Fire Science to join our growing Fire Science program. The successful candidate will be responsible for the Firefighter I Academies, teaching classes, providing academic counseling, assisting in coordinating and maintaining the skills lab, assisting in curriculum development. This is a term-funded position and is reviewed annually for contract renewal at the University's discretion. Duties:

100 Support UAF bipartite mission of performing teaching and public service. Develop and implement course and program level assessment. Maintain regular office hours according to contractual guidelines. Write and update course syllabi, assist with curriculum review, revision and development. Engage in professional development and technology upgrading activities. Contribute to the improvement of the program, college and university through committee participation. Attend department and campus wide meetings. This position will be responsible for the Firefighter I Academy to include delivery of the approved curriculum, both lectures and skills, ensure adequate support personnel for skill days, coordinate logistical staff for instructional support and maintain all records in compliance with State of Alaska accreditation requirements. The Firefighter I Academy and in-service instructional areas focus on the manipulative and technical skills for fire suppression activities; fire prevention and public education; ethics and diversity training; rescue; and hazmat. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Candidates will be evaluated on suitability of their academic preparation, past teaching experience, potential for providing high quality instruction to undergraduate students and ability to work as a team player.
Must have a background in the fire service and be knowledgeable of Fire service operations.
Must be willing to teach skills, in addition to lecturing in the classroom.
Have the ability to demonstrate manipulative skills, including lifting (up to 50 lbs.), carrying and climbing activities.
Demonstrated ability to use personal computers and various word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
Effective organizational, planning, communication and interpersonal skills.
Requires a sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
The successful candidate will:
Demonstrate ability to communicate well, both written and oral.
Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of ethical responsibilities.
Be able to use personal computers and various word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
Possess strong competency in critical thinking skills.
Demonstrate the ability to work with people of all ages, cultures, races, ethnicity, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Possess a valid Alaska drivers license. Preferred Experience & Education:
Prior teaching experience in a fire academy or as a fire training officer is preferred.
Diverse fire service experience, both in terms of levels of responsibility as well as types of Fire protection and fire service locations is also preferred.
Required Experience & Education:

An associate's degree in discipline appropriate to the position or equivalent experience and two years of experience in the fire industry.

Certification as NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I and Hazardous Material Operations certification or equivalent are required.
Although not required for this position, it is preferred that the successful candidate hold or obtain certification as a Fire Instructor through the Alaska Fire Standards Council.

UAF CTC offers 40 associate degrees, certificates, and occupational endorsements at 5 instructional locations throughout Fairbanks and the Tanana Valley of Interior Alaska. UAF CTC is responsive to local and regional vocational and technical training needs, and focuses on workforce development to meet the needs of the region and the state. UAF CTC's programs also provide students with the academic framework to help them achieve their higher education goals, whether it is to complete an associate of arts degree or transfer to a baccalaureate program.
In addition, UAF CTC provides career training and development opportunities through workforce development and professional development programs. Staff and faculty have forged close ties with businesses and local agencies, enhancing instruction and increasing job placements.
UAF CTC has an annual budget of approximately $14 million, and employs a diverse population of approximately 35 full-time faculty and 200 adjunct faculty who are represented by two unions and a staff of about 35. Approximately 3000 students attend UAF CTC. They are culturally diverse and include many non-traditional students and students from the military community.
