Position Summary: The Departments of Art and Alaska Native Studies within the University of Alaska Anchorage is inviting applications for a multi-year term position in Alaska Native Art. This position consists of teaching undergraduate Alaska Native Art class at all levels. The Department of Art The Department of Art, a NASAD accredited institution, is composed of seven full time faculty and ten adjunct faculty whose diverse artistic pursuits provide a wide range of educational opportunities for students. The Department has 118 art majors who are pursuing BA and BFA degrees in six areas of study. Our mission is to prepare and empower students to use their creative abilities to make a difference in our community. A comprehensive multi-studio approach encourages innovative thinking, strengthens creativity and technical ability and develops a broad knowledge of historic and contemporary art and design. The Department of Alaska Native Studies The Department of Alaska Native Studies provides an in-depth perspective on contemporary Alaska Native Societies, language, cultures, history, politics, art, tribal governments, and our for-profit as well as our non-profit corporations. Many students find a passion for Alaska Native Studies and delve into interesting research projects ranging from the perspectives on kinship, philosophy, symbolism and storytelling to examining the psychological and cultural perspectives of human development and wellbeing of indigenous people.

A successful candidate should have advanced level knowledge of Alaska Native culture, arts and traditions. A candidate must be able to communicate with and enlist the help of elders as needed to enhance programming. Applicants should have evidence of a commitment to collegiality, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The candidate should specialize in 3-D art making techniques and have an interest in contemporary technical processes, such as CNC Router and 3D printing. A successful candidate must be able to demonstrate involvement in teaching community workshops, artist demonstrations, and apprenticeships/mentorships. The candidate should possess a desire to help students succeed in reaching their goals. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated involvement in teaching community workshops, artist demonstrations, apprenticeships/mentorships. One year of college/university level teaching experience. Evidence of creative and professional accomplishments with a trajectory towards developing a national reputation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants for this position must have completed a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Native Arts or equivalent experience.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, Term Instructor or Assistant Professor position. Salary will be based upon applicable academic preparation and experience complete with a competitive employee benefits package:
