Requisition Number: 52049 Location: Boulder, Colorado City Boulder State Colorado Employment Type: Faculty Schedule: Full-Time Date Posted: 02-Oct-2023 Close All Job Summary The Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position with a focus on autonomy for aerospace engineering and sciences. While machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) have enjoyed success in applications like text generation with soft failure modes, the Smead Aerospace Department is working towards a future where ML/AI can be relied upon in Aerospace domains where near-perfect safety and reliability are critical. Research topics of particular interest are centered on the engineering and application of ML and AI in Aerospace systems, including but not limited to: testing, evaluation, and certification of autonomous aerospace systems with ML/AI components; ML/AI for human-centered system design; ML/AI for secure and resilient vehicles, systems and infrastructure; and intelligent collaborative transportation networks.

This position is anticipated to be hired at the Assistant Professor rank; however, qualified candidates may be considered at the Associate Professor or Professor rank. The position is anticipated to start in Fall 2024, but a later start date may be negotiated. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences is nationally known for teaching and research that address both challenges and opportunities facing the aerospace profession.

Students work extensively on hands-on experiments in the Practical Innovation Through Learning, Observation, and Teaching (PILOT) Laboratory and design projects alongside expert Faculty in the department's world-class research centers. CU aerospace alumni are working at top companies and research labs, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, The Boeing Company, and Lockheed Martin. We are home to 58 tenure-track, research, and instructional faculty, over 550 graduate students, and over 1,100 undergraduates.

Our vibrant community of engineers and scientists tackle challenges in Aerospace technology and science. The Smead Aerospace Sciences Department has active research programs Aerospace Autonomy through the Research and Engineering Center for Unmanned Systems (RECUV), the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research (CCAR), the Integrated Remote and In-Situ Sensing (IRISS) initiative, and the new CEAS Robotics Program. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be A successful candidate in this position will be expected to: Engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. Develop an externally funded research program in their technical area. Contribute professional leadership and service to their unit, the college, and their professional community.

The typical distribution of work for this role is 40% teaching, 40% scholarly and creative work (research), and 20% leadership and service. What We Can Offer The anticipated academic year salary range for this position at the Assistant Professor rank is $105,000 - $120,000. Qualified candidates will be considered for Associate Professor or Professor rank. The full salary range is $105,000 - $180,000, depending on rank.

A relocation stipend may be available within CEAS guidelines. Be pioneering. Be Boulder. What We Require Applicants must have earned a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Aerospace, aeronautical, or astronautical engineering, or a closely related field or have their Ph.D.

conferred before starting a tenure-track faculty appointment. Candidates being considered for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank are expected to have an established and ongoing program of original research, a strong publication record, and demonstrated ability to obtain external funding as well as a record of high-quality teaching and mentoring. What You Will Need Applicants must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to teach and work in a highly collaborative environment.

An understanding and appreciation for aerospace engineering fundamentals, as well as excellent management, communication, and organizational skills, along with a willingness to learn quickly, is required. Candidates should have prior teaching, research, and/or industry experience in Aerospace engineering, aeronautics, astronautics, computer science, or closely related fields. Candidates should be able to develop an externally funded research program that can include collaborations with colleagues throughout the Smead Aerospace Department and across the College and Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Candidates should be capable of teaching a wide range of undergraduate aerospace engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory formats. Candidates should also be capable of teaching core graduate courses as well as developing new graduate courses as part of the Autonomous Systems Focus Area.
