Position Type:

Position Type:
Regular
Salary Range:
Hiring range is $109,080-$121,131 Based on experience, education, and expertise
Purpose:
Purpose
The School of Engineering at Santa Clara University (SCU) invites applications for tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in the areas of Robotics and Automation, starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. This is a coordinated search between the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with the objective of hiring two candidates in total, with one hired by each of the two departments. In their cover letter, applicants should indicate the department in which they believe they best fit. The School is particularly interested in candidates whose work can create synergies with the School's new interdisciplinary Master of Science program and Graduate Certificate in Robotics and Automation as well as with ongoing faculty work in the areas of robotics, mechatronic and embedded systems, and control systems. Other interests include candidates who conduct work that aligns with mission-oriented themes of the university (such as sustainability and humanitarian engineering), who are able to build collaborative programs with other faculty in the department(s) and school, and who are capable of building strong partnerships with local companies and organizations in Silicon Valley.
The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering has specific interest in candidates with expertise in areas such as intelligent robotics, autonomous systems, industry 4.0, system optimization or other emerging areas of research related to autonomous systems. The ideal candidate will be able to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in areas related to embedded systems, robotics, and autonomous systems including lower division courses of a fundamental nature.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has specific interest in candidates with applied expertise in areas such as intelligent machines, autonomous systems, novel robotic design (soft robotics, advanced sensors/actuators, etc.), smart manufacturing, and human robot collaboration. Candidates will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in one or more areas such as dynamics, control systems, design, mechatronics, and related mathematics and computing courses; teaching more focused courses relating to the candidate's research expertise will also be possible.
All SCU tenure-track faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The ideal candidate will develop an active research program that leads to high-quality publications, grant applications, and the inclusion of both undergraduate and graduate students in scholarly work. The candidate is expected to be invested in teaching a range of courses and be enthusiastic about curriculum innovation and student engagement. We especially encourage applicants whose goals and professional or life experiences enrich the department and school community and who can serve as a role model and mentor to a diverse student population.
The new Assistant Professor will join the SCU engineering faculty at a time of significant opportunity for research laboratory establishment and programmatic development. The School of Engineering has recently moved into the newly constructed state-of-the-art 300,000 square foot Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation (https://www.scu.edu/stem/). It houses engineering and science departments, research laboratories, teaching laboratories, and versatile spaces facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and involvement in humanitarian engineering. In addition, the new faculty member will have the flexibility and resources to shape the future of robotics and automation research at Santa Clara University
Review of applications will begin on December 1st , 2023
