About the Role
The Elections and Political Processes team is seeking a diligent, organized and enthusiastic Temporary Project Assistant with strong communication skills and demonstrated interest in elections and democratic transitions to assist NDI's Elections and Political Processes Team. The Elections Team is responsible for advising and assisting NDI's regional teams in implementing election-related programs around the world, including providing assistance to civil society partners. The Temporary Project Assistant will gain an enhanced understanding of how elections present challenges and opportunities for promoting peaceful and open political competition, and how citizens can better oversee and participate in political affairs. In addition, the Temporary Project Assistant will be encouraged to attend relevant lectures, discussion sessions and other events around Washington, D.C., and will have the opportunity to collaborate with NDI staff working on areas that may be of particular interest. The Temporary Project Assistant will work primarily with the program associates and program officers of the Elections and Political Processes team based in our Washington, D.C. office. The position will be based in Washington, D.C. and is a paid temporary (3 months with the possibility to extend to 6 months) position.
Your Purpose and Impact:
  • Track political and electoral developments in specific countries in Africa, Asia, Europe/Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East relevant to principles for inclusive, credible, and peaceful election processes;
  • Produce daily news updates for distribution to the team by reviewing foreign and domestic newspapers, magazines, or journal articles;
  • Respond to requests for information on election-related issues and NDI's election programs;
  • Research, gather materials and prepare briefs for country or regional specific programs;
  • Coordinate online outreach and communications for the Elections Team and a global network of civil society activists;
  • Update and maintain resource materials;
  • Conduct research projects on specific election-related issues;
  • Attend meetings, briefings and seminars on regional affairs and prepare oral and written presentations to team members;
  • Assist in the preparation and drafting of periodic reports, such as country-specific political and program updates;
  • Assist as needed in providing administrative support to assigned country projects, such as coordinating travel for staff/consultants/participants, processing payment requests, filing/scanning/copying/shipping documents, and other tasks related to supporting backstopping program field office activities and event planning;
  • Update and maintain databases of NDI election programs and consultants;
  • Conduct special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in political science, international relations, regional studies or additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on a one-for-one basis;
  • Curiosity about and passion for the impacts of digital media and Technology on citizen's lives.
  • Experience studying social media through Crowdtangle or other online research tools and platforms is a plus
  • Fluency in a foreign language (particularly Arabic, French, Russian, or Spanish) and/or technical knowledge specific to the needs of the team highly desired
  • Demonstrated interest in international issues related to democratic processes and institutions, and the role of elections in promoting inclusive and equitable democratic reform;
  • Strong attention to detail with experience prioritizing and managing multiple tasks;
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience with event planning and managing logistics is strongly desired;
  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired;
  • Experience with social media platforms, including Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter), strongly preferred;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to work independently and with others in a fast-paced environment;
  • Weekday availability of 40 hours per week for at least three (3) months.

To be considered for a Temporary Project Assistant at NDI, you must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Bachelor's degree is $17.00. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Master's degree is $18.00.
*Please note - temporary hires at NDI are paid hourly, are classified as non-exempt, and are therefore eligible to receive overtime pay. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits, including insurance and retirement plan benefits, and paid time off. Temporary employees of NDI-DC are not represented by the NDI Union.
Additional Information:
While there may be flexibility for remote/hybrid work environment, and to comply with tax and legal obligations, successful candidates must be residents of MD, DC, MD, or VA, or relocate prior to the start of employment at NDI.
