Caterpillar is seeking a highly motivated government affairs and communication specialist who has experience working in Congress, trade or industry associations or a government affairs office for a global company.  The Washington, D.C. based position will provide executive support for the SVP of Global Government and Corporate Affairs (GGCA) in addition to managing critical projects for the entire division.   

Principal accountabilities may include, but are not limited to the following areas:

Senior Vice President Support:

  • Lead SVP external meeting management, travel and correspondence with key stakeholders. 
  • Serve as point of contact and coordinator for executive visits to Washington, DC.
  • Support the SVP on GGCA professional development budget and programs, mentor programs, stretch assignment and special project opportunities to support GGCA team career and T&D efforts.
  • Prepare and maintain vendor contracts and invoice reconciliation for enterprise and division accounts to ensure compliance with enterprise financial codes and practices.
  • Work with business resources on monthly budget results input to ensure YTD forecast accuracy.
  • Support the SVP in developing and managing the GGCA global budget which includes monitor all sponsorships, memberships, and contributions to federal and state trade associations and business councils.
  • Represent Caterpillar and the SVP in interactions with stakeholder groups and executives including outreach to trade associations and business councils and attending or hosting Caterpillar-sponsored receptions, conferences and meetings.  The candidate will often be included in representing the company at external events.


Office Management:

  • Manage Caterpillar’s D.C. office as point of contact for vendors and site management activities. .
  • Responsible for DC office onboarding for new team members.

Global Government & Corporate Affairs Division Support:

  • Coordinate with the division leadership team to produce board presentations on Caterpillar Political Action Committee (CATPAC), the Caterpillar Foundation, global government affairs advocacy work, and proposed legislation or regulations that could impact the business.
  • Support projects and communications on standard operating procedures including policies and processes on public affairs events.
  • Serve as project lead on leadership team strategy sessions, talent review and regularly meetings including organization, support on agenda setting and follow up action items.  This also includes supporting the team on presentations and preparation.
  • Provide organizational and editing support for multiple external and internal communication efforts including monthly reports and communications calendar.
  • Provide assistance on GGCA All Employee Meetings, surveys and follow up correspondence associated with goals, execution and other collaboration efforts.
  • Serve in advisory role in communicating with the team on multiple capacities; assist the team in editing SVP communications to achieve the appropriate tone and assist with implementing new or modified GGCA initiatives and work products.
  • Provide project support on events including Congressional visits, team meetings and other initiatives.    

External Relations

  • Represent Caterpillar and the SVP in interactions with stakeholder groups and executives including outreach to trade associations and business councils and attending or hosting Caterpillar-sponsored events, receptions, conferences and meetings. 
  • Provide project management support for events such as “Construction on the Mall.”

Job Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the U.S. political system – especially the legislative and executive branch.  Experience working in Washington, D.C.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in government affairs or communications support role such as; Congress, trade associations, corporate government affairs office, public relations firm.
  • Excellent presentation development skills - Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Microsoft Excel and Teams.
  • Ability to manage workload with minimum direction and supervision.
  • Highly organized and can manage multiple high priority tasks simultaneously.
  • Motivated to learn and work in the government and public affairs space.
