Purpose
To assist with journey-level installation, retrofit, repair, and maintenance of electrical, instrumentation, and controls systems in an electrical generation and chill water production environment. Responsible for assisting with journey-level craftsmanship in the installation, retrofit, repair and maintenance of circuit breakers, motors, motor starters, VFD's, soft-starters, PLC/DCS systems, UPS systems, ATS's, lighting and other electrical, instrumentation, and controls related items.
Responsibilities
  • To assist with the Install, retrofit, repair, and modification of circuit breakers, motors, motor starters, VFD's, soft-starters, PLC/DCS systems, UPS systems, ATS's, lighting and other electrical, instrumentation, and controls-related items in power and chill water production environment. Accuracy is required in all phases of work. To assist with preventative or corrective maintenance tasks on low and medium voltage circuit breakers, motors, motor starters, VFD's, soft-starters, PLC/DCS systems, UPS systems, ATS's, lighting, and other electrical, instrumentation, and controls-related items in power and chill water production environment. To assist with detailed periodic inspections of circuit breakers, motors, motor starters, VFD's, soft-starters, PLC/DCS systems, UPS systems, ATS's, lighting, and other electrical, instrumentation, and controls-related items in a power and chill water production environment. Identifies and reports safety hazards, and corrects as necessary. Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas. Ability to assist with work on medium voltage equipment i.e. 4160 V and 12 kV, and perform Power Plant and Chilling Station switchgear maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Works around hazardous materials, in high temperatures and loud environments. Keeps current on all changes to operating and maintenance procedures, new equipment, and related systems. Assists with and maintains records of equipment repair, and inventory of spare parts and other materials. Works in conjunction with other trades or craft personnel in support of systems within a power and chill water production environment, utility tunnels, and campus buildings. Complies with standards of workmanship and safety. May perform elevated work, including utilizing scaffolding and personnel lifts. May work in confined spaces, including tunnels and man-holes. To assist with troubleshooting system problems which could require following detailed operational and maintenance procedures. May operate bridge cranes, hoists, forklifts, and other equipment as required. Follow all University and UEM safety policies and procedures, take required safety training, and identify and report safety hazards. Perform work tasks in a safe manner, wear the proper personal protective equipment, and report near misses and incidents. Abide by Utilities and Energy Management's set of core values: Safety, Respect, Integrity, Reliability, Teamwork, and Excellence. Work effectively from a remote office or on campus. Drive a university vehicle or cart. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Perform other related functions as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school graduation or GED. At least three years of related apprentice-level experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems for mechanical, electrical, and industrial equipment. Have a current Texas apprentice electrician license or attain one within 3 months from the date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
More than three years of related journey-level experience in the operation and maintenance of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems for mechanical, electrical, and industrial equipment in a power and chill water production environment. Have a current Texas journeyman electrician license
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
