Breck is Hiring a Remote Technical Writer
Summary
Breck is seeking a scientific Technical Writer for a potential, upcoming opportunity. This will be a full-time position responsible for applying comprehensive knowledge of technical writing/editing to use plain language to describe scientific findings that are published in peer-reviewed academic journals so that the methods and implications of the findings are conveyed clearly to executive-level leaders who may not have science backgrounds. Potential candidates must have familiarity with technical writing in the forensic, life, physical, or social and behavioral sciences. This role is in service to a federal agency client.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Proofreading written materials for typographical, grammatical and format errors; ensuring products are of consistent quality
- Applying plain language principles and grammar
- Editing for consistency, united, and “one voice”
- Writing materials such as two-page bulletin spreads, scientific summaries for client website, and scientific/academic journal articles
- Incorporating a range of styles and “voices” suitable to various formats or media
- Review published materials and recommend revisions or changes in scope, format, and content
- Interviewing subject matter experts
- Working with subject matter experts in drafting, reviewing, and revising content.
- Attending agency workshops and presentations
- Maintain records and files of work and revisions
- Communications with stakeholders (verbally and written)
- Quickly understand and transition between different projects, concepts, initiatives, or work streams
- Conducting fact-checking and proof-reading, when requested
- Tracking publications and materials through the clearance process and keeping relevant parties updated on the status of projects

REQUIRED
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience writing and editing publications and various documents.
- Minimum of 5 years translating complex materials into plain language
- Experience with writing for, or contributing to, scientific journals
- Experience with, or familiarity with, sophisticated scientific methods and the application of science to law enforcement issues
- Must be able to interpret high level scientific language into plain language for audiences in law enforcement, criminal justice, or elected officials
- Experience with preparation of written policies, research studies, procedures, instructions, and other technical documentation
- Experience managing clients and communications product requirements
- Experience managing the process of approvals and quality assurance in project deliverables
- Strong interpersonal communicator through in-person, verbal, and written communication
- Able to receive and follow through on feedback and direction
- Goal-driven, accountable, and able to work within deadlines
- Resourceful multi-tasker
- Conceptual thinker with strong analytic skills
- Strong work ethic
PREFERRED
- Bachelor’s degree in professional writing or another related field.
- Currently holds, or is able to obtain, a Public Trust.

- Remote, but must be in the DMV area
