Provide geologic expertise to the operating units of the USG Mexico to ensure a consistent supply of raw materials and long-term mineral reserves. Conduct multi-disciplinary geology, geotechnical, and mining projects that impact aspects of mineral extraction and manufacturing including safety, reserve and resource reporting, mine planning, quality, regulatory, and environmental.
Key Responsibilities
• Carry out detailed geological and geotechnical investigations in a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to surface and underground geologic mapping and modeling, hydrology and hydrogeology, geophysics, rock mechanics, mine and quarry design, surveying, and environmental investigation.
• Complete exploratory projects of mineral deposits for existing mining operations as well as the investigation and evaluation of new resources.
• Execute drilling programs to delineate mineral deposits, including defining specifications and contractor selection, field management, logging and sampling, geologic interpretation and modeling, and presentation of the results. Experience with various types of drilling and sampling techniques to solve geotechnical problems such as slope/bench stability and water inflows, groundwater well installation, hydrological testing, etc.
• Provide geological and mining support to ensure the safe and efficient production of gypsum at USG Mexico's 5 surface mining operations as well as support projects throughout North, Central, and South America.
• Work with mine and quarry departments to provide a wide variety of expertise in disciplines such as mineral assessment, rock mechanics, subsidence monitoring and control, mine and quarry planning and design, grade control, and reclamation.
• Ensure the accuracy of geologic models for development and production planning purposes and provide recommendations for the assurance of efficient and economical operations to maximize mineral assets.
• Responsible for the calculation, review, and reporting of the gypsum reserves and resources of the corporation. Familiarity with industry standard guidelines around mineral reserve and resource reporting. Prepare comprehensive tabulation of reserves and reports for submission of required information to the corporation and government entities.
• Evaluate resources for greenfield projects to support the establishment of mining concessions and permitting of new mining and manufacturing operations.
• Ability to work closely with corporate groups, such as environmental, FP&A, legal, risk and real estate, and treasury to identify and resolve mineral and mining related problems.
• Work independently with a high degree of initiative and detail with the ability to make sound data-driven decisions and recommendations.
Key Requirements and Skills:
• Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Geology, Mining Geology, Geological Engineering, or related disciplines. Position title and compensation will be commensurate with education and experience.
• Preferably 3-5 years of experience as a practicing geologist or mining engineer, preferably in the field of industrial minerals and mining.
• Strong verbal and written skills to effectively communicate complicated and specialized information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Organizational aptitude to effectively undertake and prioritize multiple projects at a time.
• Knowledge and experience with computer applications such as AutoCAD or DraftSight, Leapfrog Geo, Maptek Vulcan, Surfer, Global Mapper and other specialized applications.
• Willingness to investigate and apply new technologies to solve technical challenges and advance the organization.
• Familiarity with GPS and aerial surveying techniques, procedures, and global coordinate systems.
• Fluent in both Spanish and English
• Travel as required, with the ability and willingness to travel in foreign countries.
• Position will be based in Mexico, preferably in Baja California Sur.
Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
