Job Description
Supporting the commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship, ITS advances interdisciplinary collaboration, research, discovery and design through the ongoing transformative development of the ITS MakerSpace. It is a cutting-edge fabrication lab equipped with state-of-the-art equipment designed to encourage making and creation to members of all skill levels. The ITS MakerSpace is seeking a Technical Lab Manager to bolster the existing technology services while aiding in these transformative efforts.
The Technical Lab Manager will oversee the daily operations of the ITS MakerSpace with an emphasis on equipment upkeep and maintenance. The Technical Lab Manager has a working knowledge of various hardware and software and will be responsible for managing, troubleshooting and maintaining all MakerSpace technology, inventory, equipment and tools while providing a functional, creative and inclusive working environment. This individual has a passion for making and tinkering and will engage with and enrich the experience of Syracuse University community members including students, faculty and staff. The Technical Lab Manager will collaborate with upper management in direct support of the transformative efforts and will provide guidance on developments in new, emerging technologies and services.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in engineering or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 10+ years of medium scale fabrication, makerspace or similar experience that includes the operation and repair of various shop equipment and machinery and the utilization of modeling and design software.
  • Extensive background in electronic and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing undergraduate and graduate students a plus.
  • Previous experience in higher education highly preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience with the following technologies: 3D printing, laser engraving, embroidery, sewing, textile machines, vinyl printing and cutting, electronics, soldering, CNC milling equipment and lathes.
  • Demonstrated experience in related software including CAD, Blender, Simplify3D, Adobe Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator), Melco DesignShop, Roland CutStudio, and Roland R-Works.
  • Experience with music production, instruments and sound equipment and related software including ProTools.
  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and operate in a demanding work environment.
  • Exceptional relationship building skills and ability to empower others.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities
  • Maintaining and managing the day-to-day operations and equipment of the ITS MakerSpace, including inventory, equipment organization and installation.
  • Engaging with Syracuse University community members including students, faculty and staff, supporting 2,000+ work orders per year.
  • Providing training and supervising 15+ student support staff to ensure they have the proper skills to operate MakerSpace equipment safely.
  • Leading tours, workshops, trainings, tabling events and classes to build a co-curricular experience and encourage making and innovation for the Syracuse University community.
  • Assist in planning initiatives and researching new equipment and tools to further innovation and making.
