Teacher III - Transitions Specialist
Hybrid - 5715 W Belmont and 4822 N Broadway
Summary
Under the general guidance of the Supervisor, English Language Training, the Teacher III provides instruction within the guidelines established by the Organization and specific departments within this group. Instruction may take place in a classroom or online, or in the program participant's home, and may be provided to a class, a small group, or an individual. The employee in this position at a residential program may be required to remain on premises during break and/or meal periods.
The Teacher III leverages industry knowledge and best practices to promote the mission and vision of Heartland Alliance. Supports culture development and management efforts.
Essential Functions:
Duties & Responsibilities
• Provides instruction and assesses curriculum and develops new curriculum to meet participant needs and program objectives. Acts as the team leader in team teaching situations.
• Develops recruitment techniques and recruits program participants; develops assessment and intake procedures, and provides assessment and intake services to program participants; maintains good relationships with other service providers and recruitment sources; assesses participant needs for referral to additional service providers and makes appropriate referrals.
• Records individual and group progress as dictated by contract compliance and professional standards. Compiles and analyzes statistics and prepares drafts for statistical/programmatic reports for supervisor as requested.
• Provides one-on-one guidance to participants who are ready to transition into higher education or career pathways including personal and professional goal setting, credential evaluation support, job application and interview support.
• Monitors the success of program participants, tracking students who have successfully transitioned into higher education or career.
• Establishes and maintains partnerships with community based organizations, educational institutions, and entities in the adult education field.
• Develops resources to support program objectives; provides transportation and other financial assistance to program participants under program guidelines.
• Participates extensively in staff meetings, in-service training, and organization activities; participates in additional professional development trainings as assigned.
• Collaborates with colleagues across teams, communicating program details and supporting participant engagement.
• Demonstrates through knowledge of instructional theory, technique, and activities; carries the volume of work required by department standards, individual program, and organization. MBO's can be expected to affect individual accountabilities in daily operations.

Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
• Minimum four (4) years of experience working with refugee and resettlement populations is required.
• Experience in higher education or career counseling is preferred.
• Relevant lived experience in refugee resettlement or forced migration may be considered.
• Fluency in a second language may be required if mandated by funder or regulatory agency.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):
• Ability to speak and fluency in a second language including but not limited to the following multi-language abilities:
ü Ability to read and interpret documents such operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
ü Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
ü Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
• Access to regular, dependable and timely transportation
• Ability and comfortability working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
• A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
• Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.
Work Arrangement:
This role is eligible for a "hybrid" work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for "in person" meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• Each program site operates on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year. To meet both the needs of our participants and contractual obligations, employees are required to be flexible in regards to scheduling and work location.
• Program sites are located throughout the Chicago area, including the North and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs. Employees may be required to report to any one of our locations on a temporary or permanent basis.
