This position aims to ensure proper operation of the City's computer systems and maintain the IT Infrastructure. This includes tasks such as installing, configuring, and securing server systems and network devices, providing technical support to end-users, implementing backup and recovery plans, overseeing system updates, and collaborating on IT projects.
The IT System Administrator plays a crucial role in project planning and implementation, ensuring alignment with organizational goals. The position requires a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, effective communication, and collaboration within a team environment.
Position benefits include a hybrid work environment with up to two days remote per week, eligibility for overtime, three weeks of vacation, excellent pension system (TMRS) and vesting after five years of employment, paid holidays, and eligibility for health and dental insurance plans. This position does not provide direction to other employees.
- Performs management of City technology including on-premise and Cloud services. May manage storage, network, security, endpoint protection, virtualization, cloud, system monitoring, system configuration and other systems.
- Install, configure, maintain server operating systems and software. Manage and monitor system performance, ensuring optimal operation and addressing any issues promptly.
- Implement and maintain security measures to protect systems from unauthorized access and potential threats.
- Configure and maintain network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs.
- Troubleshoot network issues and collaborate with peers to optimize performance.
- Implement and manage network security measures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
- Plan and execute regular updates and patches to servers, software, and network infrastructure.
- Analyze trends and proactively address emerging issues.
- Collaborate with IT teams including security administrators, helpdesk support, and enterprise application support to ensure integrated and efficient IT operations.
- Execute and oversee the implementation of IT projects ensuring alignment with organizational objectives. Project examples: Installing new network infrastructure, replacing existing hardware, installing or overseeing ethernet or fiber cabling, and application/server installation or upgrades.
- Support the helpdesk staff as next level escalation to troubleshoot network, desktop computer and system problems, operation issues, LAN and Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile units, etc.
- Provides customer service by training computer users, instructing users on operating system applications, data management, email, and computer resource management and responding to questions and inquiries.
- Participate in on-call rotation and after-hours support for City operations as well as Public Safety including Police department, Fire department, and 9-1-1 Dispatch.
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Bachelor's degree plus four (4) years of relevant work experience OR
- High School diploma or equivalent plus eight (8) years of relevant work experience
Certification and Other Requirements
- Valid Class C Drivers License
- MCSE - Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, MCSA - Office 365, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager, and/or other approved certification required within 6 months from the start date.
Light - Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
Reading
Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Math
Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Writing
Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Managerial
Receives limited directions. The employee normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. The assignment may be reviewed upon completion. Performance is reviewed periodically.
