Incumbent will be responsible, as resident expert in applicable areas of Field Surveying and Mapping, for:

  • The leadership of a team.
  • Accepts responsibility for the projects and work assignments and exhibits the presence of mind to satisfy safety regulations and procedures.
  • Is available to guide and coach the work team in accomplishing tasks in a manner that depicts commitment to excellence.
  • Exercises independent judgment, critical thinking skills, decision making skills, and conflict resolution skills and effectively communicates alternatives and recommendations to subordinates, peers and supervisors.
  • Communicates and coordinates field surveying production activities ensuring quality control activities to obtain optimum production and utilization of team resources.
  • Provides feedback to immediate supervisor regarding employee performance of assigned crew.
  • Technical practitioner that provides surveying and mapping services for assignments, projects and initiatives that support the agency’s core mission of flood control, restoration and water supply.
  • Completes various types of surveys, such as but not limited to, topographic, hydrographic, construction, and boundary. Provides quality control and assurance for field survey operations and deliverables.
  • Prepares detailed and concise reports to specifications, schedules on site meetings with staff, consultants, and landowners.
  • Performs basic to advanced survey calculations, maintain/record legible field notes, plan, implement and completes basic to advanced and emergency field and hydrographic surveys.
  • Remains current with and operates survey-related instruments, such as GPS, total station, theodolite, conventional and digital levels, hydrographic, fathometer, echo-sounder along with ability to operate (or effectively learn) supporting survey equipment software or programs.
  • Operates and maintains all survey related instruments and responsible for staff training in applicable equipment.
  • Safely operates and maintains vehicles, ATV, watercrafts, and airboats.
  • Leads the survey field crew as the team prepares for and conducts field work.
  • Is able to communicate and interact professionally with other surveying professionals, customers, and landowners.
  • Incumbent applies working knowledge of land survey principles, surveying mathematics and discipline specific software applications to complete assignments.
  • Applies solid expertise using discipline specific instruments such as total station, theodolite, fathometer (transducer, echosounder, hydrographic survey equipment), and level as well as GPS and SCADA technologies and networks.
     

Position involves potential extended overnight travel throughout the SFWMD 16-county region.

Majority amount of time is spent performing field survey assignments.

Must be able to swim, operate a boat, and tow trailers.

Keeps abreast discipline trends and technology enhancements. Supports Bureau/Division’s emergency operations as assigned.

Incumbent receives moderate supervision.
Examples of work assignments include:

  • Performs survey calculations, measurements, and analysis for assignments.
  • Records legible and concise field notes for survey location.
  • Enters data as appropriate in SAP/Project Systems.
  • Updates the Survey GIS Benchmark & Staff Gauge database with survey results.
  • Performs manual labor at survey site to complete assignments which would require ability to use various tools such as chain saw, machete and hammer.
  • Spends a majority amount of time performing field survey assignments.
  • Responsible for field data collection and is in responsible charge of the field data and staff.

                                               

Employment Guidelines:
Surveyor & Mapper Specialist – Field: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline, such as but not limited to, Surveying & Mapping, Engineering, Geomatics & GIS and 2+ years' experience that demonstrates measurable career and technical progression that can be applied to support the Bureau and Division’s work plan and the District’s business plans and strategies.
  • Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Licenses / Certification(s):

  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License required. 
  • Working toward NSPS Certified Surveyor Technician
  • FAA Part 107 
  • Working towards obtaining State of Florida Professional Surveyor & Mapper License

Survey Specialist 2:

  • Associate's Degree in Surveying or related field and 8+ years’ experience of qualifying field survey work including supervising and directing work activities of field survey crew.

Licenses:

  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.

Composition of office and field work (percentage dependent upon position requirements), with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas.
