Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Director, the manager assumes responsibility for direction and coordination of all functions in the unit. IN collaboration with other members of the management team, this individual is responsible for the ongoing assessment of the quality and quantity of services performed by the Sterile Processing Department. Manager advises senior management regarding the status of the quality improvement processes in the department. The individual anticipates and estimates future needs of the unit to promote and improve quality of services provided to Surgery, Cath Lab, Emergency Room, FMS, Wound Care, nursing units and any other area needed. Collaborates and coordinates the efforts of the staff in the unit to accomplish the Mission and Values of the hospital. Dedicates 75% of the time engaged in clinical activities and 25% of the time engaged in managerial tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assures that equipment and instruments are provided to all departments according to policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the operation and clinical activities within the department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Quality Improvement processes.
  • Demonstrates competence to instruct and monitor staff performance, implement plan of action and promote staff education and growth.
  • Directs and promotes the practice within the department to maintain high quality in all processes via validation and evaluation of practice standards.
  • Interprets, inspects and reviews policies and procedures with unit staff to ensure compliance with organization standards.
  • Develops and prepares staff and self educationally, for change and improvement within the department.
  • Manages and participates in the competency evaluation process of SPD staff.
  • Assures the preparation, packing and sterilization of instrument trays, instruments and packs follow the policy and procedures, AAMI, AORN and any other standards applicable to SPD.
  • Follows recommended standards and controls to ensure sterilizer loads are processed according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Assures record logs are maintained as per policy.
  • Assures proper cleaning and assembling of equipment.
  • Manages decontamination, assembly, sterilization and timely delivery of instruments and trays to user departments.
  • Participates in Infection Control Committee activities.
  • Ensures that work and storage areas are clean and orderly.
  • Orders stock and special order items as needed.
  • Manages the sterilization of instruments, equipment, surgical linen and related supplies according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Informs Bio-Med of equipment no longer serviceable and other problems that arise.
  • Periodically analyzes the workload and HR needs of the department. Recommends staffing levels.
  • Assists with candidates for job openings and assists with hiring decisions.
  • Orients new staff members to the department’s organization, policies and procedures, and what is expected regarding their performance. Reviews position responsibilities with staff.
  • Plans, delegates and controls work assignments and special projects of department personnel.
  • Establishes specific work goals or quantitative and qualitative standards for personnel.
  • Trains, develops and motivates department staff to improve performance and to prepare them for higher-level jobs.
  • Determines significant changes in responsibilities and major tasks of personnel by reviewing job responsibilities on a regular basis.
  • Evaluates the performance of department staff. Discusses past and present performance with each staff member. Keeps director informed of performance and development activities within the department.
  • Keeps staff and director informed of organizational developments which affect job responsibilities.
  • Maintains discipline and recommends corrective action as warranted.
  • Assists with budget questions and capital equipment recommendations as requested.
  • Develops annual departmental objectives to support institutional goals and objectives.
  • Develops short and long-range plans for SPD.
  • Reviews and approves new and revised systems, methods, policies and procedures for collecting, decontaminating cleaning, reprocessing, storing and distributing supplies, instruments and equipment.
  • Maintains a quality control program to ensure compliance with institutional/departmental policies and procedures as well as The Joint Commission and OSHA standards.
  • Serves as a resource person in areas such as sterilization, stock rotation methods, arrangement of trays and proper use and maintenance of supplies and equipment, decontamination, reprocessing (including sterilization), and patient charges.
  • Serves on Product Value Analysis Committee, Infection Control Committee, OR Committee, Case Cart Committee and other committees as assigned. Performs work for committees as is requested.
  • Conveys a positive customer service attitude. Answers telephone in courteous manner. 
What qualifications you will need:
  • Certified Surgical Technician (CST), or Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CSPT)
  • BCLS

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of one year of management experience
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience in sterile processing, distribution, or as a scrub technician

PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Associates degree in healthcare field
