The Head of Strategic Remediation Validation Testing is responsible for leading Northern Trust’s validation program over significant remediation activities including those of regulators and internal audit. This high-profile role engages with senior members of Northern Trust to ensure successful Validation Testing over significant remediation activities. Working closely with the Head of Strategic Remediation Oversight and Governance, the role serves as a primary point of contact for regulators and senior management regarding issue remediation testing activities.
This individual will play a key role in standing up and managing Northern Trust’s Remediation Validation program, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and translating multiple requirements into a balanced validation program. The seasoned professional provides functional expertise, strategic direction, and execution rigor to enable management and coordination of issue validation and related testing activities, and will help build strong, cross-functional relationships throughout the organization working closely with the leadership of the Strategic Remediation Oversight and Governance team.
The role will report directly to the Head of Strategic Remediation Oversight and Governance and shall manage a small team of full-time partners, and loaned and/or co-sourced subject matter experts across North America, EMEA and APAC.
The key responsibilities of the role include:
Leadership and Management
  • Manage the development and maintenance of Remediation Validation program documents including playbooks, frameworks, and plans
  • Design and execute validation plans that are compliant with established procedures and aligned with industry best practices
  • Manage complex and multiple project objectives
  • Manage project resources to accomplish complex scopes of work and objectives
  • Interact with a wide range of stakeholders, including management, executive management, regulators, and external auditors
  • Present to the Corporation’s Business Risk Committees, and local/regional Audit Committees, Oversight Committee, Legal Entity Boards, and Risk Committees as needed
  • Lead, guide, and coach staff, and foster an environment which encourages partner participation, teamwork, and communication
  • Oversee the professional development and performance management processes, including recruiting, developing talent, building an effective technical team, and resource optimization
Operational
  • Oversee and manage all validation activities within assigned areas of responsibility as well as input to the running of the overall function as part of the management team.
  • Identify efficiencies and synergies in Validation Testing and operational activities to enhance coverage and align testing priorities across other testing areas
  • Interact and partner with senior and executive management to understand remediation plans, timelines etc., and challenge as necessary.
  • Maintain familiarity of and technical expertise with business unit(s) organizational structure, personnel, activities and products, new product development, financial performance, and risk and problem areas
  • Issue clear, concise reports and/or memos ensuring timely communication of risks and testing conclusions to senior and executive management.
  • As part of the Global Regulatory Affairs group, input into Board presentations and provide thought leadership
  • Stay current on regulatory rules and changes within the industry
  • Leverage a strong peer network and tap the industry to identify leading practices
The successful candidate will benefit from having:
Required Skills / Experience
  • A college or university degree
  • 15+ yrs. experience in financial services, with 10+ years of testing/auditing experience in a financial institution, or similar consultancy experience in the financial services industry
  • 5 years of previous management experience
  • Superior analytical, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to multitask and demonstrate flexibility to change plans at short notice
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms, with all levels of staff and management
Preferred Skills / Experience
  • Professional certifications (e.g., CPA, CISA, CIA, ACA, ACCA) and/or an MBA or JD along with demonstrated technical abilities in select areas (e.g., accounting, regulatory compliance)
  • Senior manager-level experience in designing and delivering high quality, high value internal testing programs for large businesses or regulated environments
