JOB INFORMATION
Supervising Liability Claims Representative positions direct and supervise a professional staff and participate in the administration of the City's Public Liability Claims Program and the Public Liability Loss Recovery Program; review, manage and adjust highly complex and sensitive claims; investigates and pursues collection of damages that are sustained to the City of San Diego’s property, as well as injuries to City personnel by responsible parties or their insurers; presents insurance claims to the City of San Diego’s insurance carriers; determine the validity of claims and obtain accurate costs and supporting documentation; negotiate settlements with claimants and their attorneys; establish work policies and procedures; establish policies and ensure conformance of program operations to established standards; recommend methods to reduce or eliminate potential losses and risks to the City; collect data for risk studies and insurance applications; prepare written reports; serve as liaison with City Departments, City Attorney, etc.; provide training to staff; prioritize, review, evaluate and rate the work performance of subordinates; assist in preparing cases for litigation; and perform other duties as assigned.

- Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EXPERIENCE: Four years of full-time professional experience investigating, adjusting and settling general and/or automobile Liability Claims involving bodily injury, personal injury or property damage at a level of responsibility equivalent to a Claims Representative II with the City of San Diego (a position that investigates, adjusts and settles difficult and varied bodily injury and property damage claims against the City; reviews accident and injury reports; interviews and corresponds with claimants, witnesses, attorneys and physicians; approves or recommends denial of claims; negotiates settlements; represents the City in small claims actions; and performs projects related to the maintenance of the City's insurance portfolio).
NOTE:
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
- Supervisory experience.
- A valid designation as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU).
- Possession of an Independent Adjuster's License issued from the State of California Department of Insurance.
- Experience and knowledge in the investigation, adjustment and settlement of claims under the California Government Tort Claims Act.
- Experience in Loss Recovery, Subrogation, and/or Collections; including first party property claims and reporting claims.
- For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
