DAN RIVER YEAR AMERICORPS PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Dan River Year, a program of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), is dedicated to addressing community needs in southern Virginia. We mobilize AmeriCorps members in a community-supported environment to build capacity in the region, strengthen community involvement, and address pressing needs. In 2023-2024, AmeriCorps members will focus on building the region’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and literacy capacity.

Summer STEM Educator
DATES OF SERVICE
June 2024 – August 2024
POSITION SUMMARY
Summer STEM Educators will provide direct and indirect service support to site(s) during summer camps, bridge programs, and family STEM activities. Member will focus on building and introducing curriculum and activities for students helping prepare them for and middle school to improve their literacy, math, and/or STEM skills. Member will also assist with supervision of all students enrolled in the program, and ensure safety and well-being of the children is maintained. Summer STEM Educators will also lead the efforts in researching, planning, implementing, and evaluating other STEM programs. Summer hours may vary between 8:00 am – 7:00 pm Monday-Friday (30-40 hours/week)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provide age appropriate tutoring sessions and other academic support activities to students in an informal learning setting.
- Lead instruction and assist other educators with engaging instruction that assist students enrolled in summer program(s).
- Provide guidance and discipline to ensure a safe and positive environment for youth.
- Collaborate with other members and coordinators to create additional camps for students enhancing their and STEM literacy skills at the end of summer.
- Keep records and report to coordinator on a regular basis.
- Document progress of learner’s goals and administer pre/post assessments.
- Collaborate with staff, fellow AmeriCorps members, and partner organizations to develop and support ONE pre-approved service project and support the broad STEM capacity building interests.
- Recruit volunteers to support identified service opportunities.
- Attend all mandatory host site and Dan River Year meetings.
- Attend all planned training sessions for AmeriCorps members.
- Complete and submit accurate and timely documentation of AmeriCorps service hours as required by the Dan River Year.
· Maintaining confidentiality in all assignments and responsibilities.
- Acting as a positive role model.
APPLICANTS MUST:
- Be at least 18 years old on their first day of service
- Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien
- Have an associate’s degree preferably in the education field or leadership experience equivalent.
- Not have served more than the allowed number of AmeriCorps terms previous to this term
- Submit to a full background check, including a sex offender registry check, state criminal history registry check, and FBI fingerprint-based check. This position may have recurring access to vulnerable populations and selection is contingent upon satisfactory results of these checks.
- Dress appropriately; i.e., as a professional educator.
- Abide by Computer Technology Acceptable Use & Internet Safety Policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent mathematical skills (successful completion of at least Algebra II)
- Silver level National Career Readiness Certificate
- Intermediate computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office products
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Access to a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Experience working with young people, job seekers or adult learners
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Experience in an AmeriCorps program or Dan River Year AmeriCorps alumni
BENEFITS:
· Living allowance of $3,600 for a service term of 300 hours over 10 weeks
· Eligibility for Segal Education Award of $1,459.26 [BS1] at the end of a successful term of service, which can be used to repay student loans or for current or future education.
· Mileage reimbursement for non-host site location travel
