Position Summary
The Cell Therapy Preclinical Biology team in the Cancer Immunology and Cell Therapy Thematic Research Center is focused on developing novel cellular immunotherapies to treat high unmet need oncology conditions. Our goal is to revolutionize medicine by re-engaging the body's immune system to treat cancer. At the core of that mission are the talented individuals who contribute their unique skill sets to help us drive innovation and deliver truly life-changing drugs for our patients.
BMS is looking for individuals who are passionate about Cell Therapy and interested in working with a team of scientists and engineers in developing T cell-based medicines. In addition to their project assignments, interns will have opportunities to attend community-building functions including speaker sessions and recreational activities, throughout the summer. At the conclusion of the program, interns will present their project progress to their teams and leaders.
This position is a hands-on, laboratory-based role in Seattle, WA in the Cell Therapy Preclinical Sciences group. The candidate will gain experience with the identification, development, and testing of a lead Cell Therapy drug product candidate that integrates cutting edge gene editing technologies. The candidate will support the design and execution of experiments, analysis of results, and communication of conclusions within cross-functional teams. The intern will gain a deep understanding of the responsibilities of drug product development as a whole and how those responsibilities fit into the larger early drug development pipeline. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as with guidance from a manager and as a member of a team performing interconnected Preclinical Cell Therapy development activities. The candidate should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, possess excellent analytical and quantitative skills, be able to communicate their problem-solving process and ideas, and ask questions and learn from their teammates. The candidate will gain functional knowledge of laboratory equipment (such as flow cytometry, Incucyte, robotics), cell culture, research scale production of CAR-T cells, and biological assays for functional testing of Cell Therapy drug candidates.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and execute experiments with supervision to assess function of drug candidates and cellular engineering methods for product optimization
• Complete timely and thorough documentation of electronic laboratory notebooks
• Critically analyze and interpret data using statistical methods
• Organize, record, and maintain experimental data sets
• Communicate study findings across multiple departments
• Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with policies/procedures/regulations
Qualifications & Experience
• Currently a Sophomore or Junior pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (Students with graduation dates from December 2024 - May 2026)
• Understanding of cellular biology
• Strong quantitative skills
• Familiarity with primary cell culture and sterile technique
• Experience with flow cytometry assay methods a plus
• Initiative-taking to learn and contribute, willingness to learn with hands on participation
• A passion and curiosity for experimentation and problem solving
• The ability to thrive in a collaborative team
• Effective communication and organization skills
• Ability to recognize and report problems and solicit direction from supervisor
• Enthusiasm for science, laboratory work and drug discovery
