POSITION SUMMARY:
The Occupational Safety & Health intern will participate and support the development, implementation, and evaluation of Occupational Safety programs and industrial hygiene activities in the Occupational Safety Department. The intern will work under the supervision of the Occupational Safety Team including the Senior Manager Occupational Safety Programs and the Lead Industrial Hygienists.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Participates in the review and update of Occupational Safety programs such as Hazard Communications Program, Respiratory Protection and Confined Space.
  • Assist in review of safety data sheets (SDS) for all products, materials, and chemicals under Amtrak's Chemical Approval Program.
  • Assist with developing training and informational publications for distribution.
  • Review Personal Protective Equipment and update specifications and collaborate with Procurement
  • Analyze and interpret results, recommends appropriate corrective actions, and follow up on safety issues or concerns through completion.
  • Assist in the review and trending of incident data and monitor corrective actions.
  • Assist in Job Safety Analyses.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Actively pursuing an undergraduate or higher degree in Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field at an accredited educational institution.
  • Completed at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies or have sophomore status at minimum. 
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skilled in written and verbal communication.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with Tableau
  • Proficiency in OSHA standards, 29 CFR 1910 and 1926
  • Familiarity with industrial work environments; railroad
  • At least Junior status or pursuing a graduate degree

 

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc.  In addition paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.

If an applicant/employee refuses to provide written consent for Amtrak to obtain these records, the individual will not be permitted to perform safety-sensitive functions.

 

In accordance with federal law governing security checks of covered individuals for providers of public transportation (Title 6 U.S.C. §1143), Amtrak is required to screen applicants for any permanent or interim disqualifying criminal offenses. 


Note that any education requirement listed above may be deemed satisfied if you have an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
