Description
Under the direction of the Transportation Manager or other assigned administrator, operate a School Bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.
Examples of Duties
Drives a School Bus over designated routes in accordance with specified time schedules and in accordance with regulations and laws related to pupil transportation; transports students to and from school, special events and field trips; observes legal and defensive driving practices.
Picks up and discharges students at established bus stops in a timely manner; escorts students across streets; reports incidents which affect the safety of students as necessary; enforces and maintain rules of conduct; reports cases of misconduct to appropriate personnel.
Maintains bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections including cleaning windows, mirrors and bus interior and exterior; checks brakes, brake lights and doors; reports mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel; assists mechanics with minor repair activities.
Maintains cleanliness of bus inside and out.
Transports students with disabilities to and from designated locations; assists with lifting and securing wheel chairs and car seats; assists in the loading and unloading of special education children as necessary; controls and communicates effectively to children with special needs.
Maintains records concerning vehicle maintenance, miles driven and number of children transported and other related matters; prepares student conduct, incident and accident reports; maintains student information.
Educates student on bus safety procedures including coordinating evacuation drills; communicates with parents, staff and students regarding various transportation or warehouse issues.
Utilizes two-way radio for bus to bus and bus to base communication.
Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Safe driving practices.
Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO:
Operate a School Bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.
Maintain order and discipline among students while driving a School Bus.
Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.
Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
Learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards.
Maintain routine records.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Be flexible to perform work within changing priorities and possess sufficient interpersonal skill to work harmoniously with staff, students, administrators, parents and others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Assist in loading and unloading handicapped children as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school and all licenses and other requirements listed below.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California School Bus Driver Certificate. (Type 1 Only)
Class B driver's license with passenger endorsement.
Valid Medical Card, and CPR and First Aid certificates.
DMV H6 Driving History Report
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed indoors, outdoors and in a vehicle and confined space.
Constant noise.
Varying temperature conditions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Seeing to monitor students and perform assigned transportation activities.
Lifting to assist children on and off the bus.
Sitting for extended periods of time when operating a transportation vehicle.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to clean buses.
HAZARDS:
Various traffic hazards including stopping traffic and escorting students across streets.
Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions
Exposure to fumes, gasses, grease, and oil.
Work is performed with moving parts.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Effective January 1, 1995, all employees in this classification with a valid Class B license are subject to the Federal Highway Administration regulations for drug and alcohol testing as required by the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Health & Welfare Benefits
Full-time employees are required to purchase medical health benefits. Half-time and less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. Health benefit costs are 100% employee paid through a pre-tax payroll deduction. Employees may opt out of health coverage upon presentation of proof of alternate coverage.
Dental coverage is mandatory for all employees working 20 hours per week, or more, regardless of outside coverage. Less than half-time employees may participate on a voluntary basis. The District contributes the full premium for "employee only". Any additional premium will be employee paid.
Classified employees must participate in the CalPers Retirement program.
All employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistant Program (EAP).
The District also offers various optional benefits including life insurance, short term disability, and a medical and dependent care flexible spending option.
Vacation
Following the completion of six (6) months of probationary service, employees will receive credit for five (5) working days of vacation. Every month thereafter, employees will accrue vacation at a rate of 5/6 of a working days. (2 weeks per year).
Annual employees accrue vacation hours to be taken off at a later date.
School year employees earn and are paid out vacation hours.

Annual employees receive fifteen (15) paid holidays per year. Holidays are:

Employees working the following number of days shall have the following amount of sick leave credited annually to their records at the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1.
