Required Skills & Qualifications:
- GED or high school diploma
- Substance Abuse counselor Certification (or in progress) from any of the following:
Certification Board of CA, Am Acad of Health Care Providers in the Addiction Disorders, CA
Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors, CA Dept of Alcohol & Drug Program, National Comm of Certifying Agencies.
- Ability to prioritize workload
- Ability to perform detailed work and monitor for errors
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines
- Ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner

Description of Duties
- The Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) is assigned to provide services to patients determined to have Substance Use Disorders at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- The SAC primarily provides activities, education, prevention, intervention, treatment and advocacy to adults and families in the area of Substance Abuse and related issues.
- The SAC completes a comprehensive assessment of clients' Substance Abuse history, treatment requirements and uses this information to develop individualized treatment plans.
- The SAC documents treatment and discharge plans, clients' progress and response to treatment, and maintains related electronic medical records and files.
- This SAC will also engage in community outreach and engagement efforts both as part of following up with
- individual patients after they are discharged and in order to educate community based organizations and their clients about the substance use services offered at Harbor-UCLA and help build referral pathways with these CBOs.
