While this position primarily facilitates workshops in conjunction with guided field trips, it will also assist with art activities for programs beyond guided field trips, including summer writing camps, annual Community Day festivals, Reynolda on the House workshops, and occasionally monthly family workshops. Enthusiastically teaches students of all ages, including adults and individuals with disabilities. Demonstrates care and attention to individual and group needs. Helps maintain the studio classroom and assists with planning for exhibition and collection-related art activities.Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Teaches (typically) 30-minute art activities to K-12 students and adults that connect to Reynolda’s collections and history. Lessons may repeat within a group’s visit to accommodate everyone. Available 1-3 mornings per week for tours, as scheduled, and occasional afternoons with advance consultation.

  • Prepares materials, sets up, and cleans up from studio programs.

  • Mounts completed, dry artwork when relevant then coordinates the return of art to the group.

  • Helps maintain order of materials and cleanliness in classroom space.

  • Works closely with the Director of Teaching and Learning to plan activities and art supply needs.

  • Engages students with various abilities, interests, and learning styles. Inspires creativity by fostering belonging in an encouraging learning environment.

  • Inspires and encourages participants to exercise their individual creativity, making accommodations when necessary.

  • Plans and teaches studio art activities for two weeks of writing camps in the summer (typically one week in June and one week in July, 8:30-2:30, teaching time would be one to two hours each day).

Other Duties:

  • Researches the works in the Museum’s collections that support the lessons to develop an accurate understanding of Reynolda’s history as both a private estate and as an institution for higher learning

  • Ensures safe usage and storage of art materials and tools

  • Understands, enforces, and abides by museum guidelines and safety protocols

  • Supervises volunteer assistants in the classroom

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in visual arts, art education, or related field

  • Experience teaching art with primary school-age children (2+ years)

  • Expertise in various art-making techniques and instruction

  • Strong communication skills, excellence in managing and interacting with groups of people

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus

  • Experience teaching secondary students and individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work

  • Supervises a volunteer assisting in their classroom

Physical Requirements:

  • Bending, reaching, coordinated bilateral movements to use paper cutter etc., removing and returning items from shelves and cabinets of different heights and depths

  • Speaking clearly and understandably to a whole classroom over the course of two hours

  • Sitting, standing, or leaning in order to be near students’ and their artwork

  • Seeing student activity across a room and artwork from nearby

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds

Environmental Conditions:

  • Indoor mostly with some outdoor instruction
