Student Assistant Liaison -International Arctic Research Center

You will offer prompt responses to online (email, phone, zoom, etc.) communications and inquiries from scholars and colleagues. Effectively communicate with foreign scholars prior to their visits to assist with trip preparation and provide in-person support during the foreign scholar(s) stay in Fairbanks while ensuring their needs are catered to and facilitating a comfortable experience.

Key Responsibilities:

-Communication & Professionalism:
1. Ensure punctuality for all meetings and engagements.
2. Offer prompt responses to online communications and inquiries from scholars and colleagues.
3. Communicate with foreign scholars online prior to their visits to assist with trip preparation.
4. Provide in-person support during their stay in Fairbanks, ensuring their needs are catered to and facilitating a comfortable experience.
-Logistic Support:
1. Drive UAF rental cars or personal vehicles to assist scholars with their daily logistics.
2. Shuttle scholars between accommodations and working places or research sites.
3. Assist scholars during their fieldwork preparations and expeditions in Alaska.
4. Provide occasional translation or interpretation assistance, especially for Japanese scholars.
5. Liaise between the scholars and various UAF departments or Alaskan entities for seamless collaboration.
-Laboratory & Fieldwork:
1. Assist with laboratory tasks as requested from related research projects, including sample preparation and analyses.
2. Engage in fieldwork activities, which might include operating research equipment, moving supplies, and aiding in data collection.
3. Perform data entry into spreadsheet databases, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
4. Review datasets for anomalies and errors, ensuring data integrity.
5. Collect, maintain, and manage research data diligently.

Minimum Qualifications:

Enrollment as a student at UAF.

Ability to work between 10 to 20 hours a week (up to 40 hours in Summer).

Proficiency in the Japanese language is a strong advantage.

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Experience or willingness to work in laboratory and field settings.

A keen interest in fostering international collaboration and research.

Position Details:

This position is located on the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) campus in Fairbanks, flexible on-site/hybrid work arrangements may be considered in accordance with UA regulations. This is a part-time, non-exempt student position, starting at $15.00 dollars per hour.
