ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: Currently searching for motivated and responsible Tutor/Peer Mentor to work in the ARCHES TRIO Student Support Services Program. ARCHES is a TRiO Student Support Services grant that serves students with disabilities with the goal of helping them reach the goal of graduating.
ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Enterprises offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Enterprises offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Enterprises also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Enterprises and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Pepsi Scholarship. In addition, the Enterprises administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Enterprises contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
The Tutor/Peer Mentor will work one-on-one with program participants with the writing process through brainstorming a topic, thesis statement development, outlining/structure feedback, grammar and citation help; and provide organizational strategies, decision making skills, general study skills, time/life management support, and transitional support in peer mentoring sessions. The ARCHES Peer Tutor/Peer Mentor should have a strong desire to be part of team environment that supports the development of ARCHES students.
Tutoring
- Provide weekly individualized tutoring with assigned tutees in an in-person and virtual format.
- Assist tutees with understanding the connections between class lecture, course notes, and text materials; making connections between previously understood information and new material.
- Utilize technology and traditional learning aids to help students develop effective learning techniques and study strategies.
Peer Mentoring
- Mentor students for life management, time management, organization, study strategies, learning styles, and other general ongoing support.
- Attend weekly meetings to discuss participant progress and concerns.
Office Support
- Assist in administrative duties including, answering phone calls, and screening student inquiries and providing basic information to answer questions and/or direct student to appropriate resources if needed (e.g. ARCHES advisors, DRC, CAPS, college Advising Centers). Assist students who may be in distress.
- Responsible for maintaining a high level of professionalism and creating a welcoming environment that promotes inclusivity and equity.
- Assist with other program activities and special projects including, but not limited to; evaluation of program services; creating bulletin boards; maintaining semesterly calendars, creating and sending weekly newsletters; maintaining social media promotion (Instagram, YouTube, and others).
- Maintaining accurate records of sessions and student progress.
- Adhere to university confidentiality standards when meeting with students.
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- CPP junior (+60 sem. units), senior, or graduate student in good academic standing (Transfer students must have completed a minimum of 1 term at CPP).
- English or Liberal Studies major.
- Must be able to work in-person.
- Minimum 2.5 overall GPA (3.0 or higher preferred).
- Familiarity with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, CPP Connect, and Microsoft Outlook, desirable.
- Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities, desirable.
- Experience tutoring and knowledge of tutoring methods or theories, desirable but not mandatory.
