Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Staff Associate, Adult Education - Volunteer Services (Part-Time)

DEPARTMENT: Adult Education/Economic and Business Development

PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River and Taunton

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: 

The Staff Associate Literacy Volunteer Support for Adult Education (AE) is responsible for the overall operations and development of the literacy volunteer tutoring program. The Staff Associate Literacy Volunteer Support for Adult Education will recruit and conduct the training of volunteers, interview and assess adult learners requesting tutoring, establish tutorial matches or classroom assignments, prepare reports and enter data required by Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) into the Literacy, Adult and Community Education Systems (LACES) database system. Literacy volunteer services may be offered in face-to-face, hybrid, or online modalities to Adult Basic Education and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) learners in Taunton and Fall River.  Tutoring sessions may be held in secure locations during the day, in the evening, and on weekends. This position is primarily based in Fall River and Taunton with some collaboration with staff in other Adult Education locations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct literacy volunteer recruitment, screening, orientation and training in order to meet requirements for active volunteer caseload
  • Design, schedule and implement literacy volunteer tutor training program for adults that integrates digital literacy tools for students such as, but not limited to, educational software, remote learning, and online learning platforms
  • Train volunteers to deliver tutorial sessions remotely, in-person or within the classroom
  • Develop and revise literacy volunteer orientation as needed in order to align training to the College and Career Readiness (CCR) and Massachusetts English Language Proficiency (MELP) standards as well as other program initiatives
  • Maintain communication with Adult Education instructors and advisors to develop a pool of students in need of tutorial services 
  • Match ABE and ESOL students with tutors
  • Maintain accurate program, volunteer, and student records
  • Assume responsibility for all volunteer-related reports mandated by DESE
  • Maintain LACES database for the volunteer program
  • Supervise and provide ongoing support for literacy volunteers; review weekly tutoring reports and meet to discuss challenges as necessary
  • Participate in staff and program development team meetings
  • Attend professional development activities related to professional standards and program goals to advance tutoring services
  • Complete required college trainings such as, but not limited to, Harassment & Discrimination Prevention and Information Security
  • Plan and hold annual literacy volunteer appreciation event
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with Bristol's Library Learning Commons to ensure AE students have access to tutoring services as needed
  • Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.
  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions and work collaboratively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree required*
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with individuals from diverse educational and ethnic backgrounds*
  • *An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience shall be considered.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing educational and training sessions and presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to design and/or utilize blended or online education models.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body
  • Ability to work nights as necessary
  • Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience using evidence-based practices in Adult Education
  • Experience working with non-native English speakers
  • Experience working with individuals in an educational setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency with learning management systems, such as but not limited to Google Classroom
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English

Additional Information:

POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, grant-funded, non-unit, non-benefitted, 18.5 hours per week position. The anticipated schedule is Monday and Wednesday mornings/Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Some flexibility may be needed. Occasional afternoon meetings are required. This position may be subject to grant appropriations.

SALARY:    $29.40 per hour.
