Form of workCooley is seeking a Staff Accountant to join the Accounting & Finance team.
Position summary: The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintenance of the Firm's general ledger ("G/L") and assisting the department with various accounting tasks. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Position responsibilities:
- Reconciling, coding and maintenance of the Firm's general ledger, which includes monitoring expense activity regularly to ensure the proper coding of expenses
- Open and close of general ledger accounts after obtaining the necessary approval
- Advise attorneys and business professionals on the appropriate GLs to charge expenses and assist with training and education of all Firm employees on proper coding of expenses
- Update all G/L related documentation on the Firm's internal website, as needed
- Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations to support month-end and year-end closing process
- Oversee and reconcile certain G/L accounts to ensure no mis-postings
- Assist the Treasury Department with bank reconciliations and other treasury related tasks as needed
- Assist with tracking of fixed assets, including calculating depreciation expense and budget projections
- Prepare quarterly banking reports in accordance with the Firm's borrowing agreement
- Manage firm-held investments, which includes processing investment documents and payments and coordinating with attorneys in the execution of documents and sales
- Manage the process of tuition payments, which includes preparing annual schedules and coordinating with the Legal Talent department in all aspects of the process
- Prepare various tax filings (i.e., property tax and sales & use) with supporting workpapers and assist in any related audits, if applicable
- Assist in the annual audit and tax return process, which includes preparing documents for the Firm's third-party service provider and addressing inquiries
- Work closely with the Accounting/Finance team to identify and implement processes to increase accuracy and efficiencies
- Perform ad-hoc projects, as needed
- All other duties as assigned or required
Skills and experience:
Required:
- After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage, Elite 3E, and other firm applications
- High degree of proficiency with Excel
- Available to work overtime, as required
- 3+ years of accounting-related experience
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting
- CPA
- Previous law firm accounting experience
- Elite 3E experience

The expected hourly pay range for this position is $34.00 - $47.00/hour. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate.
