Job description

Drew University is seeking a Senior Accountant in the Finance Department.

Hours/Shift/Work Schedule: This is an exempt position, and the expectation is that the job will be performed to completion, typically within normal business hours.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Senior Accountant is responsible for applying generally accepted accounting principles and procedures ensuring the accountability, accuracy, and integrity of financial information. The position works with departments to ensure compliance with accounting control policies and procedures and timeliness of information. This position also works closely with the Director of Accounting to create processes to develop more efficient and effective procedures for the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare and update fixed asset, capital lease, and CIP schedules, which also includes the recording of additions and disposals, monitoring depreciation calculations, and preparing a capital purchases vs. budget analysis
  • Prepare and maintain Right of Use Asset/Liability lease schedules and monthly adjustments along with annual audit disclosures
  • Prepare journal entries and reconcile monthly general ledger accounts such as accounts receivable, development cash and non-cash accounts, and pledges receivable etc. in support of the monthly and annual fiscal year end close
  • Set up ACH payments and wire transfers
  • Maintain the corporate credit card notification reminders and upload monthly transactions. In addition, verify compliance with credit card policy to uploading supporting documents and required approvals
  • Manage and maintain the University’s contracts, leases, building information, and license documentation
  • Manage annual preparation of Federal 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC & 1099-R reporting in agreement with IRS requirements
  • Prepare unclaimed property status schedules, correspondence and submit the unclaimed property filings for multiple states, annually
  • Scan journal entries and accounts payable documentation for coding and linking in Banner
  • Serve as the financial point of contact for grant reporting
  • Prepare assigned year-end schedules and collect materials for annual audit and tax return
  • Document procedures for finance activities, meet compliance requirements, and/or provide supporting materials for requested actions; preparation of a wide variety of manual and electronic fiscal information, files and records for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail.
  • Participate in a successful annual audit by responding to and executing the appropriate data and instructions resulting from such audits
  • Document procedures and program accomplishments
  • Other tasks as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Working knowledge of GAAP, FASB and Not-for-Profit Accounting
  • Three - Five years of progressively responsible managerial accounting experience
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Windows, and financial software applications
  • Ability to handle confidential information and liquid assets with discretion
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Organized and detail-oriented

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Higher Education accounting experience
  • Advanced Degree in accounting or related field
  • CPA or related professional certification
  • Familiarity with Banner or other ERP system

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. This is sedentary work, which requires the following physical activities: sitting, walking, bending, stooping, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity.
