Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Special Investigator Supervisor, performs statewide, national, and at times international investigations of a highly complex nature, oftentimes involving multiple criminal offenses, working with a high degree of independence. Reviewing allegations, complaints, or other information to determine if criminal offenses may have been committed. Conducting investigations, including but not limited to; theft, fraud, embezzlement, forgery, conspiracy, fraudulent schemes, political corruption, etc. Conferring with prosecuting attorneys regarding the progress of investigations, quality of case files and evidence, drafts of subpoenas, warrants, etc. Preparing affidavits to obtain search warrants, arrest warrants, wiretaps, and physical characteristic court orders.
Individuals who have served honorably as a peace officer in Arizona and whose certification as a peace officer has lapsed, or served in another state or a federal agency, may be eligible to gain Arizona POST certification through Waiver Testing in lieu of attending an Arizona peace officer basic course at an academy.
The selected candidate will have to complete the Peace Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) prior to the background process.
Background check and in-state travel is required.
Job Duties:
Reviewing information and documents; analyzing data, planning case strategy, maintaining case files and evidence; preparing case reports.
Interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects on the phone or in person. Travel as required, including state, interstate, and international that may require overnight stay. Engage in undercover investigation operations, conducting surveillance of case suspects, and investigative activity with other local, state, and federal agencies.
Preparing and serving search warrants; conducting searches; seizing and securing evidence. Serving arrest warrants; physically arresting suspects and booking suspects in jail.
Conferring with prosecuting attorneys (e.g. Asst. Attorney General, County Attorneys, US Attorney) concerning investigations and legal issues.
Testifying in criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
- Pertinent State and Federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
- Modern law enforcement methods, best practices, and procedures
- Search and Seizure, rules of evidence, and custody of prisoners
- Defensive tactics
- First Aid, CPR
- Court systems, procedures, and protocols
- Activity reporting and accounting procedures established for the work system
Skills in:
- Applying methods and techniques of undercover law enforcement work and surveillance
- Communicating professionally and diplomatically, under difficult and even contentious circumstances
- Use and care of firearms, Operate police equipment in emergencies
- Exercise discretion in the use of force
- Interviewing and interrogation techniques that provide positive results pursuant to contact with victims, witnesses, and suspects
- Problem-solving and using good judgment
- Have completed the basic and advanced training that demonstrates substantial comparability to the Arizona basic course.

- Maintain moral standards and integrity

- Make effective and reasonable decisions under pressure
- Operate law enforcement computers, software, and database programs

- To obtain an appointment from an Arizona Law Enforcement Agency.
Selective Preference(s):
Experience, education, and training in law enforcement/criminal justice environment and course work resulting in a full authority Peace Officer Certifications as mandated by Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). Minimum 3 years in an investigative or detective unit.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certification.
Weapons certified in accordance with AZ P.O.S.T. standards.
Must have and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license.
