SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
POSITION TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORT SPECIALIST - 200 Days
LOCATION: WERZ CENTRAL OFFICE
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the guidance of Special Education Program Specialists and the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Support Specialist will be responsible for the following:
1. Provide supervision, support, evaluation, and monitoring of Special Education programming to include child find, evaluation and referrals, eligibility, IEP, progress monitoring, and state data reporting (ie: FTE, discipline, etc.) for all assigned schools.
2. Provide ongoing support and training for schools regarding appropriate Special Education eligibility determination for initial referrals to Special Education.
3. Provide training and coaching for teachers in the development of the IEP and Special Education eligibility report for students with disabilities.
4. Provide training and coaching for, and orientation of, new Special Education teachers.
5. Ensure accurate and timely information is entered into the GOIEP program, according to district procedures, and provide training and support for staff regarding use of the GOIEP program.
6. Ensure due process procedures are followed and all Special Education timelines are met for assigned schools.
7. Provide training and coaching for teachers regarding implementing specially designed instruction and behavioral supports.
8. Facilitate appropriate scheduling at assigned schools to ensure students with disabilities are scheduled according to the IEP and students have access to the least restrictive environment.
9. Model and facilitate positive collaboration among parents, school staff, and district office staff.
10. Perform other reasonable duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION OR TRAINING:
Masters degree or higher and appropriate state Special Education certification is required.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
Extensive knowledge, training and experience in the education of students with disabilities is required. Excellent oral and written communication, strong interpersonal relationship skills and strong technology skills are required. Experience with adapted curriculum self-contained classes is preferred. Experience working with students with Autism and other significant cognitive and/or behavioral concerns is preferred.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the field of Special Education to include successfully serving in a leadership capacity. (ie: In-School Coordinator, LEA Facilitator, and/or Behavior/Autism Specialist.) Successful experience leading eligibility, manifestation determination and IEP meetings.
