About Sussex Montessori School:
Sussex Montessori School was approved as a charter school by the Delaware Department of Education in April 2018. We serve students in grades K-6. The Sussex Montessori School Board believes that having a Montessori public school in Sussex County, DE improves student learning, allows for greater choice for parents, and serves as a model for alternative approaches to education by providing a proven and innovative teaching and learning environment.
The mission of Sussex Montessori School is to nurture the development of empathetic, collaborative, persistent and innovative global and community citizens in accordance with the time-tested philosophy of Maria Montessori, through authentic personalized learning experiences, respectful relationships, opportunities to innovate, and a focus on global citizenship.
The school is located in Seaford, Delaware, which is a diverse rural area with a thriving Hispanic population as well as growing Haitian community.
Summary of Position:
The School Social Worker/Counselor promotes and enhances the overall mission and vision of the school by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and address barriers to learning and achievement. The School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment. Such an environment is achieved by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success along with the implementation of effective intervention strategies.
Duties:
- Assessment of Student, Family, and School Needs
- Effectively and appropriately assess and address the needs, characteristics, and interactions of students, families, school personnel, and community.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations in accordance with family and student rights.
- Use student, family, and school assessment results to identify needs that affect student learning.
- Use assessment and evaluation results to develop appropriate interventions for students, families, schools, and communities.
- Promote family support of students' learning experience within the context of understanding and competencies.
- Provide services to students in ways that build upon individual strengths and offers students maximum opportunities to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experience.
- Provide services such as counseling, social emotional support and others as needed.
- Develop and provide training and educational programs that address the goals and mission of the school.
- Advocate and facilitate change that effectively responds to the needs of students, families, and school systems using appropriate statutes, case law, policies, and procedures.
- Promote services to students and their families within the context of multicultural understanding and competence that enhances families' support of students learning experiences.
- Assist students and their families in gaining access to formal and informal community resources.
- Conducts individual and/or system-wide surveys to assess the school and/or community needs.
- Plan school and/or system-wide programs to promote a safe, healthy, caring school climate that fosters academic success. (i.e. anti bullying campaigns, SEL awareness week etc.)
- Assist the school and community in planning programs that alleviate situations that may interfere with the learning process of students.
- Assist in the evaluation of effective departmental, school-based, system, community, and statewide programs.
- Assisting with Food Pantry and other community support services
- Homeless and Foster Care Support Services
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in social work from a regionally accredited college or university
Behavioral Intervention experience
Demonstrated understanding of diversity, educational equity, and multicultural education
Preferred Qualifications:
- LCSW license
- At least 5 years Social Work Experience
- Knowledge of behavioralintervention
- At least 5 years of successful instructional leadershipexperience
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapyexperience
- Fluent in Spanish and/or HaitianCreole

Notes:
This is a 36-hour/week, 10-month position. A criminal background check, Child Protective Registry check, and tuberculosis test is required.
