JOB SUMMARY

Burning Man Project’s Social Media Manager is responsible for managing and executing the strategy of Burning Man Project’s Social Media presence. The Social Media Manager will ideate, design, and publish content specifically tailored to different channels and that demonstrate Burning Man’s positive cultural impact and advances the nonprofit’s mission and overarching narrative. In alignment with the organization’s communications strategy, this person will maintain, adjust, and develop the storytelling efforts on the nonprofit’s Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIN, SoundCloud, YouTube, and other channels. This person will also perform regular channel and audience research, manage a calendar of key posting priorities, seek out new opportunities to expand the nonprofit’s reach, and recruit and manage a team of volunteer content creators.

This position is a regular, full-time, eligible for benefits role based in either San Francisco, CA or Reno, NV.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintain and Improve Social Media Strategy across all platforms - Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Linkedin, SoundCloud, Reddit, YouTube, and more.
  • Social Media Monitoring and Channel Management - day-to-day publishing, metrics reporting and analysis, short-term content planning, etc.
  • Graphic Design and Content Creation across all social platforms, as needed - infographics, Instagram Stories videos/graphics, short video editing, etc.
  • Community Commenting Guidelines and Enforcement (in collaboration with Managing Editor) - work to create a safe space for dialogue, update and maintain community guidelines, etc.
  • Develop and work with a team of community designers for projects as needed.
  • Evaluate and consider new opportunities to expand Burning Man Project’s presence to other platforms.
  • Eyes and ears on the ground - surface community feedback and source community content. 
  • Design and execute public opinion and engagement strategies in partnership with the Managing Editor.
  • Black Rock City production-related duties to be assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

 


QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • 5+ years experience in professional Social Media, Content Creation, and/or Marketing roles.
  • 3+ years experience in Black Rock City.
  • Advanced understanding of the digital content landscape.
  • Proven graphic design and/or content creation experience and skills.
  • Experience developing successful Social Media strategies.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously. Must be flexible and adaptable; able to thrive in a dynamic and frequently changing work atmosphere.
  • Keen attention to detail and advanced organizational skills.
  • In-depth knowledge and embodiment of the 10 Principles, and Burning Man culture and values.
  • Must reside in the San Francisco Bay Area or in the Reno or Northern Nevada area.
  • Available to work during PST business hours and occasional nights and weekends.
  • Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada.

 

PREFERRED

  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector.
  • Extensive writing and editing experience.
  • Experience leading teams of volunteers.
  • Extensive on-playa experience, including managing teams and/or projects.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $75,000 to $88,000 annually. Additional Benefits:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required.
  • On-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore, this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and exposed to fumes or airborne particles, as well as possible extremes in temperature.
