Purpose:

The successful candidate will assist the Small Ruminant Extension State Specialist with research-based program implementation for small-scale, socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers across the state. This work will include planning and designing workshops, tours, field days, clinics and other social media events and other events. Conduct administrative tasks and work closely with administrative assistants and Small Ruminant Program staff.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Providing support to the State Extension Specialist (supervisor)
  • Assist the Small Ruminant State Specialist to develop a plan of work and activity plan of work.
  • Assisting with program implementation, including teaching, planning, designing, and evaluating.
  • Developing and compiling reports as assigned by supervisors maintaining and submitting assigned reports on teaching activities and constituent goal attainment.
  • Conducting administrative tasks, such as gathering information and other data to prepare requisitions, familiarizing with Colleague and/or other accounting systems.
  • Helping to identify, solicit, and secure extramural funding through grants, private and public donations, to include in-kind contributions.
  • Assisting the supervisor to monitor budgets.
  • Assisting in the development of teaching materials, including guide sheets and fact sheets, written at or below an eighth grade reading level on subjects related to areas of Cooperative Extension, Livestock, Agriculture and Small Farms.
  • Keeping the Small Ruminant website updated and current. As well social media posts.
  • Assisting in editing videos and other materials.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in coordinating project teams, organizing meetings, field days, workshops, clinics and face-to-face trainings and other tasks as assigned by supervisors and Extension administrators.
  • May require working on weekends and evenings; could require traveling around and outside of the State of Missouri. Typical work hours are 8am - 5pm during regular class session; 7:30am - 6pm during the summer.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

Required:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office - Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work as part of a larger team.

Preferred:

  • Experience with statistical analyses.
  • General knowledge about Small Ruminants, pasture and forages.

Desired:

  • Ability to read, speak, and understand Spanish.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations, Education, and Experience:

Required:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a major in animal science, agricultural education, agriculture, plant science, botany, rural sociology, marketing, or a closely related field.

Preferred:

Experience conducting educational sessions via virtual technologies and experience teaching and developing audience contacts using social media; experience working with USDA Cooperative Extension programs; one (1) year of experience addressing the needs of and working with low-income, ethnically diverse, underserved audiences from marginalized communities in informal group settings.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to sit a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and put away parcels, equipment and tools.
  • Normal physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on a farm.
  • Normal physical agility, which includes ability to maneuver body while in place.
  • Normal physical strength to handle routine farm equipment and tolls.
  • Normal endurance.
  • Job may require working on weekends and evenings and traveling around the state of Missouri.
