The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialists (In- Training) for the Signal ITS Maintenance Office in the King County area. The Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 - Transportation (EESS3) is a senior-level specialist that will install, maintain, and repair electrical, electronic and communication systems used in transportation and highway infrastructure owned or operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and agencies that we have written agreements with, which connects local and national transportation infrastructures.
Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Trainee, 1, 2 or 3 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -Trainee: $55,251 - $67,296 annually depending on qualifications.
Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 1: $70,749 - $86,158 annually depending on qualifications.
Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 2: $78,094 - $95,155 annually depending on qualifications.
Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3: $82,026 - $99,943 annually depending on qualifications.
Note: The listed salary ranges include an additional legislatively approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the EESS3 will:
  • Repair changeable message signs and communication outages.
  • Repair motor vehicle knockdowns and vandalism (KI's); check damage and make safe.
  • Repair cameras and associated electronic equipment, cabinets, and assemblies.
  • Identify equipment and circuit problems, employing a variety of test equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical and electronic problems in control systems, gate systems, communication hubs, ramp metering systems, weather stations (RWIS), variable message signs (VMS), highway advisory radio signs and transmitters (HARS/HART), data stations, closed-circuit television (CCTV), communication systems including fiber, and tolling equipment.
  • Perform repairs within the guidelines of the National Electric Code (NEC) and WSDOT administrative codes and regulations.
  • Enter daily work reports into a maintenance database.
  • Troubleshoot and splice fiber optic cable in accordance with industry standards.
  • Configure IP based equipment for network use.
  • Respond to call outs after hours for emergencies and work scheduled overtime as needed.
  • Perform aerial repairs employing a bucket truck vehicle.
  • Follow proper preventative maintenance procedures for each specific highway system.
  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on control systems, gate systems, communication hubs, ramp metering systems, weather stations (RWIS), variable message signs (VMS), highway advisory radio signs and transmitters (HARS/HART), data stations, closed-circuit television (CCTV), communication systems including fiber, and tolling equipment.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at theElectrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -Trainee level, the following are required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Working knowledge of Basic Algebra

To be considered for this opportunity at theElectrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -1 level, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years (approximately 4,000 hours) of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant, professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, accredited electrical or electronics training program, vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronic training, or an agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • Associate degree in electrical or electronics technology may substitute for some education or experience.

To be considered for this opportunity at theElectrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -2 level, the following are required:
  • Four (4) years (approximately 8,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL04, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and one (1) year of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.

To be considered for this opportunity at theElectrical & Electronic Systems Specialist -3 level, the following are required:
  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.

OR
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work.

The following are required at all EESS levels:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Class B CDL endorsement without air brake restriction (or acquire within 6 months from date of hire)
  • Ability to see and differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work safely.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestrictedly while climbing stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic and 600 feet above water on bridges.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with blueprints, plans, sketches, and specifications.
  • Ability to input information into databases utilizing a computer.
  • Ability to perform basic algebraic equations.
  • Knowledge of how to operate basic testing equipment for electrical/Electronic Systems including fiber optics.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07)
  • Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET)
  • A+ certification for computers and electronics
  • Class A CDL endorsement
  • Washington State Flagging Card
