Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Electrical & Electronics Systems Specialist 3 (EESS 3) for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to work as a member of the regional maintenance organization. The EESS3 - ITS is the senior-level technician of the series, is considered a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for regionwide electrical, electronics, wireless communications, fiber optic systems, and is designated as a lead position. They perform, lead, and direct diagnosis, maintenance, installation, repair, and testing of Traffic monitoring and control systems. This position coordinates work and equipment needs with other leads. This position would have public safety and the safety of fellow employees as a high priority and must be considered in every decision and activity.

What to Expect
Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Work alternate and emergency shift as situations dictate. Responding to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Requires 24-hour standby shifts on rotations basis for one week at a time.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical & Electronics Systems Specialist 3 - ITS will:
  • Perform senior-level preventative maintenance (PM), repairs, and installation on CCTV systems, Ramp Meters, Data Stations (speed detection and data collection), Variable Message Signs (VMS), Travel Time Sign (TTS), Highway Advisory Radios System (HART, and HARS), Roadway Weather Information Stations (RWIS), Stand-by Power systems (UPS), Electrical Services, Transformers, Communication HUBS (CH), and other related electrical systems within the Olympic Region on scheduled maintenance intervals.
  • Test voltages, electrical connections, and grounding on all services, transformers, solar devices, controller cabinets, etc.
  • Inspect, test, and monitor communication hub equipment, switches, servers and routers, encoders, and transceivers for operation, network connections, firmware updates, wiring termination, and configuration.
  • Diagnose all ITS devices problems in the field on active equipment and alongside active traffic.
  • Lead EESS employees in daily performance of assigned work; plan, schedule, and direct operations, maintenance, and technician activities.
  • Coordinate electrical, electronics, and communications installations and maintenance with supervisor; ensure quality and expertise in assigned EESS work operations.
  • Review project contract plans and specifications, material submittals, provide technical advice and assistance to the Traffic Design Office, the Region Electrical and Project Engineer Offices (PEO) inspectors' reviews and testing of electronic, electrical, and fiber optic equipment.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and/or electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through an electrical apprenticeship program, or accredited electrical or electronics training program, or vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronic training; or agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology AND two (2) years of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and/or electronic work.

NOTE: Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL06, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for some education or experience.
In addition to one of the above, the following are also required:
  • Possession of an unrestricted Class B CDL without air brake restriction to legally operate vehicles in Washington State; or obtain within six (6) months of date of hire.
  • Proficient in operating Windows based computers and software, such as MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook; and Cloud computing.
  • Ability to work at heights of up to 100 feet above land and live traffic and 600 feet above water.
  • Ability to transport, move, lift, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certification.
  • Possession of Electrical/Electronic Licenses:
    1. ME01, EL01, EL02, EL07, CET, FOSP Cert.
  • Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET)
  • Associate's degree in Electronics.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
