Senior Trades Worker (Building Maintenance)

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to lead and perform general maintenance and repairs in the skilled and semi-skilled trades, e.g., masonry, carpentry, flooring, electric, plumbing, air conditioning, irrigation, welding. Employees in this classification function at senior level and are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of general and preventative facilities maintenance and repair tasks to provide employees and general public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient public buildings and structures. Employee performs duties with minimal supervision with thorough knowledge and proficiency gained through training and experience in a diversity of trades work.

• Take charge of operating power construction equipment, ensuring the safe and efficient use for tasks like excavation, structural work, and concrete pouring.
• Oversee the maintenance and inspection of equipment and supplies, ensuring that all resources are in optimal working condition.
• Conduct routine checks on tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water levels, and coordinate maintenance activities as needed.
• Demonstrate expertise in the use of a wide variety of manual, gas, and electric hand tools, ensuring their proper application in various construction and maintenance tasks.
• Position performs a variety of labor-intensive tasks related to Building Maintenance, addressing challenging working conditions, such as extreme temperatures, fumes, or chemicals.
• Take a proactive stance in safety meetings and inspections, leading the way in setting up a safe work environment at job sites, including barricade and cone placement, and directing traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards.
• Coordinate response to emergency situations, ensuring they are managed promptly and effectively to contain, resolve, or prevent injuries or hazardous conditions. This includes addressing fallen debris, spills, broken windows, or locks.
• Provide expertise in various construction trades, including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical work, and HVAC systems. Act as a resource for team members and mentor junior members in these trades.
• Collaborate effectively with team members, encouraging a culture of safety, teamwork, and shared responsibility to ensure efficient Building Maintenance and repair work.
• Exhibit versatility and adaptability in performing assigned duties. These tasks should be logically aligned with the position's responsibilities within the realm of construction and Building Maintenance.

Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Four (4) years responsible experience in skilled and semi-skilled trades, e.g., masonry, carpentry, flooring, electric, plumbing, air conditioning, irrigation, welding; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Miscellaneous: Must have a valid Driver's License

• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to lead and carry out assignments with minimal instructions.
• Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices.
• Thorough knowledge of, and ability to utilize materials, methods and equipment used in skilled and semi-skilled trades, e.g., masonry, carpentry, flooring, electric, plumbing, air conditioning, irrigation, welding.
• Skill in utilizing various handheld manual and electrical tools of the various trades, e.g., hammer, screwdriver, wrench, drill, various saws, grinder, pliers, sander, tar kettle, various torches, air compressor, drill press, generator, welding equipment, electronic and electrical testing, and repair equipment.
• Ability to lead duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
• Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time
• Ability to with stand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with department management, County employees, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demand: Heavy

• 100 pounds maximum lifting.
• Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
• Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
• Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
• Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
• Physical agility in climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching.
• Required to have clear vision at near distances and at distances of 20 feet or more.
• Requires infrequent exposure to adverse weather conditions and chemicals and other hazardous materials.
