Job Description
An Engineer III is responsible for designing, developing, and/or testing a solution to solve technical problems. The Engineer can provide any one or more of the following: technology development, maturation, and applied research and engineering in automation, robotics, robot control, advanced vision systems, perception, advanced software technologies and intelligent control systems for NASA Programs and/or Projects.
- Technical integration and leadership across disciplines
- Leadership of technical teams in the planning, execution and on time completion of design analysis cycles and trade studies
- Supports the project’s Systems Engineering structures and processes that lead to a certified vehicle
- Systems engineering process development, tailoring, and management
- Architecture definition and functional flows
- Requirements definition, flow-down, assessment, and verification planning
- Plans, develops, and executes major project reviews and leads internal project reviews
- Interface definition and management
- Integrated analysis and margin management
- Technical baseline product management (MEL, PEL, THEL, Mass Properties)
- Collaborative environment development, maintenance, and implementation
- Critical path and technical risk management
- System hardware and software configuration management over lifecycle
- Data management
- Discrepancy management and participation in material/failure review boards
- Certification and acceptance package generation
- Test campaign planning and execution

- Coordination and management of qualification and acceptance test requirement definition, assessment, and flow-down from system to unit (component) level
- Support hardware owners in establishing overall hardware qualification and acceptance test planning to meet applicable requirements
- Test and verification leadership with emphasis on environmental, human in the loop, and interface testing
- Technical review of verification products (test plans, procedures, reports)
- Support failure analysis reviews to identify impacts and/or recommend changes to test programs
- Support and make recommendations regarding retest of hardware (e.g. for redesign, repair, new environments)
- Seeks opportunities for innovation to improve cost, schedule, technical performance, and safety within the project and program. Partners these opportunities with the Project Lead Systems Engineer.
- Required Characteristics
- Knowledge of and previous experience in delivering flight hardware at the project or program level
- Systems engineering experience
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills
- Desirable, but not required
- SharePoint Experience
- Experience working with international partners
- Experience applying the Doors and MagicDraw Tools within multi-level programs.
- Occasional support of international meetings in the evenings from approximately 18:30 to 21:00 Central Time may be required.
- Occasional international travel may be required.
- OGE-450 and/or ability to be cleared for procurement sensitive discussions may be required
- Colocation with project team on site at JSC is required.
Education
- A BS degree in engineering, math or science
Experience
- 8+ years performing professional engineering work.
License, Cert or Registration
- Current drivers’ license, proof of U.S. citizenship, may require a Secret clearance or an inactive clearance within the last 24 months, enabling access to various Government facilities.
Special knowledge, skills, & abilities
- NASA experience preferred and Robotics Lab experience desired
