Position Summary
Our laboratory is currently focused on projects related to therapeutic development for Wolfram syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by juvenile-onset diabetes, vision loss, and neurodegeneration. We are seeking a Senior Research Technician to perform experiments related to ongoing projects in the laboratory.
This position independently performs complex research studies, experiments and assays.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs animal and cell-based research studies.
    • Manages mouse and rat colonies including maintenance of the inventory and performing PCR-based genotyping and DNA electrophoresis.
    • Performs experiments such as qPCR, Western blotting, ELISAs, and biochemical analyses.
    • Performs tissue culture experiments.
    • Performs experiments using iPSCs.
    • Tests new treatments in cell and mouse models of diabetes and Wolfram syndrome.
    • Isolates primary tissues, including pancreatic beta cells and retinal cells, from mouse and rat models of diabetes and Wolfram syndrome.
    • Performs gene therapy/gene editing experiments in iPSCs and rodent models of Wolfram syndrome.
  • Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians.
  • Provides for data entry and current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality.
  • May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
  • Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists in the training and development of technicians, acting as a group leader.

Working Conditions
Works in laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of standard laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
  • Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
  • Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

R08-H
Salary Range
$18.40 - $31.31 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
