Position Summary
This position independently performs complex research studies, experiments and assays.
This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Senior Research Technician in a biology lab running a personal research portfolio within the Kummer lab at Washington University School of Medicine. We are a neuroscience laboratory focused on applying cutting-edge techniques to understand the mechanisms of acute brain injury, especially traumatic brain injury (TBI), and its connections to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of neurodegeneration. We are particularly interested in synaptic injury. We work with animal models (mostly mice) and with patients in the hospital, and collaborate with academic and industry partners ensuring a broad-based, growth-oriented experience and a large, diverse field of colleagues. The Kummer lab specializes in techniques including imaging, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, functional assessments, and immunolabeling.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians.
  • Provides for data entry and current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality.
  • May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
  • Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
  • Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists in the training and development of technicians, acting as a group leader.

Working Conditions
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Skills and/or education in the following areas: working with laboratory animals, microscopic imaging, molecular biology, biochemistry, behavioral testing, basic coding skills in languages pertinent to biological research (R, python, matlab, Julia, etc.).
  • Hands-on work with mice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills appropriate to a team-based enterprise.
  • Strong work ethic, professionalism, and organizational skills.
  • Data management, documentation, quantitative and experimental rigor, and a strong commitment to scientific ethics.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and teach others.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

R08-H
Salary Range
$18.40 - $31.31 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
