Job description

Purpose of Position:
Provides facilitation, advice, expertise, and education of available developmental/ training resources as required by the assigned group within the organization. Perform functions to fund and manage project activities and associated tasks, resources, and deliverables, related to research and development efforts.
Primary Responsibilities:
Accountable to:
  • Display extensive knowledge of a wide range of human-systems integration (HSI)/human-systems engineering (HSE)/training engineering methods for the ssessment and improvement of program effectiveness or the improvement of complex program management processes and systems.
  • Plans, integrates, and schedules workload, sets priorities, and furnishes advice and assistance as required to resolve problems and ensure efficiency of training operations.
  • As a technical authority, formulates, coordinates and secures approval for complex training products.
  • Designs curricula/trainings as needed for assigned topics. The position will perform work such as related to coordinating projects for the development and implementation of full-length training courses or course materials.
  • Design and execute human factors research and end user evaluations of interactive systems/product concepts, analyze data, and document evaluation methods; create tables, charts, figures, etc. and support interpretation of data for technical report and manuscript publication, and provide actionable recommendations to project team.
  • Design and execute needs analysis, focus groups, roadmapping, competitive usability analyses, cognitive walkthroughs and other research.
  • Lead knowledge facilitation sessions with subject matter experts.
  • Translate user needs into detailed requirements specifications and design documents, ensuring requirements are properly represented and the appropriate level of user participation is achieved.
  • Research literature related to specific project or proposals.
  • Prepare and submit articles for publication. Prepare written technical reports.
  • Maintain knowledge of DI’s strategic direction, goals, and objectives; communicate requirements to team members.
  • Establish project goals, success metrics, objectives, and priorities.
  • Identify tasks associated with the project and develop a project schedule, delineating constraints, prerequisites, resource requirements, and timelines based on availability. Understand impacts of schedule slippage.
  • Manage risk by identifying, quantifying and monitoring potential threats to the project.
  • Ensure customer needs are met through project planning and execution.
  • Contribute to early identification of project issues and opportunities for product improvement.
  • Communicate project status and related concerns and issues to DI management and other project teams verbally and through written documentation, including project schedules, proposals, risk mitigation and transition plans.
  • Acquire and maintain an understanding of DI practice areas, including extensive knowledge in Performance Assessment, Training Systems, Cognitive Readiness, and Next Generation Human Systems.
  • Understand DI’s product offerings; Promote products and services at various customer locations and functions.
  • Review documentation revisions and participate in various presentations and training sessions as needed.
  • Develop customer relationships; manage customer expectations with relation to project objectives.
  • Develop Statement of Work for winning bid proposals; provide task breakdown and schedule estimates to support proposal cost creation. Seek and obtain multiple funding sources; identify and write proposals; identify and secure transition customers; secure follow-on funding.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that all functional responsibilities are carried out in keeping with standard process manual and guidelines.
  • Interview, recommend and train staff as required. May evaluate performance or assist in evaluation process. Recommend staffing requirements as necessary.
  • Perform or assist with any assignments as required.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
  • Education: Masters or Ph.D. in Human Factors, HCI, Industrial Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Applied Psychology, or Experimental Psychology or related field
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years direct industry experience in human factors R&D; experience managing small projects

  • Requires proficiency in human factors techniques, such as customer needs identification, human performance assessment, knowledge acquisition, user/workplace profiles, task analysis, scenario development, user centered design and evaluation, system engineering, system requirements engineering, experimental design and statistical data analysis, designing and conducting usability tests, among others
  • Requires extensive understanding of the theories, principals, and data associated with human performance capabilities and limitations (perceptual, cognitive, motor and neural) and instructional design. Ability to apply this knowledge to the design, requirements definition, and evaluation of interactive systems
  • Requires general knowledge of the following: Performance Assessment, Training Systems, Cognitive Readiness and Next Generation Human Systems Integration
  • Requires proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office including, but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet design and maintenance, and creating presentations

Travel:
Position requires a moderate amount of local, overnight and extended travel.
Physical Functions/Environment:
Physical requirements involve performing general office activities.
