Brief Description of Duties

Reporting to the Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet, and Health, the Senior Program Coordinator for Culinary Arts will be responsible for overseeing the Culinary Arts program at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and developing and executing courses in Culinary Arts. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Center Director, Dean, program faculty, and industry experts to advance the program's goals and objectives, which include building students' skills and knowledge in Culinary Arts and promoting sustainable food practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, revision, and delivery of courses in Culinary Arts, including those that support the degree program in nutrition and dietetics.
  • Collaborate with industry experts to design experiential learning opportunities that reinforce best practices in the food industry and foster the creativity and innovation of students.
  • Chair the Culinary Arts Program Advisory Board and work with its members to strengthen the program by identifying and implementing strategies that increase enrollment, ensure high-quality educational experiences for students, and enhance the reputation of the program
  • Recruit adjunct faculty and land-grant program participants as needed to deliver courses in Culinary Arts and evaluate their effectiveness in teaching courses.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate best practices in the Culinary Arts program that align with the goals and objectives of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences and the UDC's mission of engaging students in research, scholarship, and creative works.
  • Manage and report enrollment in Culinary Arts courses and programs to ensure revenue goals are met.
  • Ensure course and program compliance with applicable accreditation standards and regulations.
  • Publish research in the field of Culinary Arts and contribute to ongoing discussions about both the science and the art of cooking through academic conference presentations, publications or other media outlets.
  • Build, cultivate, and supervise a team of culinary specialists.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Culinary Arts or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience in Culinary Arts, with a proven record in leadership in a Culinary Arts program, academic administration or industry.
  • Experience in teaching Culinary Arts courses (undergraduate students or industry professionals) and leading experiential learning opportunities in fields related to Culinary Arts.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing Culinary Arts curricula that prioritize best practices in the food industry and sustainable food practices.
  • Ability to build relationships with industry leaders and community organizations.
  • Experience in managing budgets and resources while ensuring revenue targets are met.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a culturally diverse faculty and leadership team.
  • Experience working with accrediting bodies that review Culinary Arts programs is considered an asset but not required.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
