We are hiring! AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer - HVAC - Remote. This is a remote position, based out of our Oak Ridge, TN office.

How will you contribute to the team?
  • Functionally reporting to Manager, Process Systems Engineering, and under the general supervision of Project Technical Manager, the Senior HVAC Engineer is responsible for developing HVAC system design deliverables with high proficiency, providing technical guidance and supervision to the engineering design team.
  • The successful candidate will be working with multi-discipline engineering teams supporting design and construction activities for new nuclear power facilities and/or modifications in existing nuclear power facilities.
  • Conceives and develops project related long-range technical plans, establishing priorities.
  • Provides technical direction, devising methods of achieving technical objectives in the most economical and effective manner.
  • Develops, prepares and/or reviews engineering design deliverables (e.g., design specification, over-pressure protection reports, calculations, technical assessments, drawings, bill of materials (BOMs), system classification lists (SCLs), etc.) for both nuclear and conventional systems in accordance with applicable company Quality Assurance Programs and project requirements.
  • Functions as technical interface with the client, vendors, internal engineering and project management groups on projects of substantial scale and complexity.
  • Ensures relevant Codes & Standards and regulatory requirements are adequately applied.
  • Precisely defines work scopes, clarifies client requirements, and reviews discipline work to ensure client/project requirements are being met. Initiates any necessary corrective actions.
  • Supervises and mentors engineering team members.
  • Interfaces with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
  • Attends site visits and technical/project meetings as required.
  • Supports Engineering Management with timely updates on engineering progress, performance and staffing requirements.
  • Must be "Team" oriented with a demonstrated ability to work well with others and promote a positive work environment.

HVAC System Design Specifics:
  • Creates heating and cooling systems and their controls in accordance with system design requirements.
  • Performs HVAC design calculations, which may include but not limited to:
    • heating and cooling loads calculations
    • ventilation requirements calculation based on the type of systems
    • duct sizing and selection
    • pressure drop
    • stack sizing
    • equipment sizing and selection.
  • Generates high quality design calculation reports.
  • Prepares and review flow diagrams, duct & instrument diagrams (D&ID), general arrangement drawings, isometric drawings and layout drawings.
  • Prepares technical specifications, components data sheets and specifications.
  • Estimates budgetary costs for heating and cooling systems, including summary report.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What will you contribute?
  • Requires a Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or relevant Engineering Program from an accredited University with eight (8) to twelve (12) years of experience in areas of HVAC system designs and analyses.
  • Professional Engineer License, and member in good standing.
  • Engineering experience in the nuclear industry is an asset.
  • Field engineering and implementation experiences are assets.
  • Strong knowledge in mechanical and/or process system engineering principles.
  • Strong knowledge in Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow.
  • Advanced knowledge of ASHRAE Handbooks and Standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of SMACNA Standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of NBCC, OBC.
  • Advanced knowledge of ACGIH Manual.
  • Fundamental knowledge on Principles of Smoke Management.
  • Fundamental knowledge of ASME-AG-1, Code on Nuclear Air and Gas Treatment.
  • Fundamental knowledge of ASME-N510, Testing of Nuclear Air Treatment Systems.
  • Working knowledge of Building Heating Plant and Chilled Water Systems.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and develop effective practical solutions.
  • Experience in performing design/analysis of process systems and thermal-hydraulic evaluations on complex systems.
  • Experience in Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) projects.
  • Experience in executing large scale Concept-to-Design-to-Implementation projects.
  • Experience in green-field/new-builds engineering design work as Senior Design Engineer is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear pressure boundary codes and standards, including CSA N285.0, CSA N289, ASME BPVC Section III Division 1 and ASME B31.1 is an asset.
  • High fluency and proficiency in communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office-related software applications, i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with strong multi-tasking skills.
  • Adaptability to change and thrives in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.
  • Eligibility to obtain Security Clearances is mandatory.
  • Travels to client job site sites are required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen in order to be considered.
