The Position
Senior Librarian - Youth Services
A 9.5% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2024.

The Ontario City Library has an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Senior Librarian to coordinate and lead efforts for learning services to youth. The Senior librarian plans and hosts programming and participates in collection development, outreach, and reference services for patrons. They also serve as a part of the supervisory team, with supervision responsibilities of paraprofessional staff. The Senior Librarian would take an integral part in establishing a new initiative to increase literacy skills for youth in Ontario through the creation of new programs and partnerships.
The ideal candidate takes initiative, is highly organized, enjoys establishing community connections and partnerships, has excellent communication and writing skills, possesses leadership skills, and follows and anticipates current library trends. They will establish and maintain good relationships with other library units, city agencies, school districts, and community groups. Additionally, the successful candidate will embody the Ontario City Library's Mission, Vision and Values as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the values of the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Excellence through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way.

The Ontario City Library has been serving the public as a City department since 1894. The Ovitt Family Community Library and Lewis Family Branches of the Library contain over 315,000 items, including books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, audio books, kits and a local history collection. A wide variety of technology is available for the public including internet, several software, eBooks, and state of the art technology through Lightspeed makerspace that offers access to equipment such as 3D printers and a laser cutter. The Library offers a wide variety of programs and services for all ages including early literacy, Veterans Resource Center, adult literacy tutoring, workforce development training, and the Robert E. Ellingwood Model Colony History Room.

Examples of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Senior Librarian include the following:
  • Provides specialized reference assistance requiring knowledge of library collection and reference materials.
  • Complies bibliographies of library materials.
  • Makes oral demonstrations utilizing multi-media equipment and on-line resources; conducts library orientation and training classes; develops and arranges displays and exhibits.
  • Researches collections and reference materials in response to requests on a range of topics.
  • Selects, orders, and classifies new books and materials; makes determinations regarding the binding, replacement and withdrawing of materials.
  • Develops and implements programs and services; markets programs and produces promotional materials; makes related presentations.
  • Trains support staff and responds to technical questions regarding professional protocol and department policies and procedures.
  • Conducts fund monitoring and analysis; prepares reports and records for assigned section.
  • Supervises and directs the activities of library personnel and volunteers within assigned section. including employee selection, work assignment, training, performance evaluation, employee development, coaching, disciplinary action, and complaint resolution.
  • Stays informed regarding trends in the library science profession by attending in-service training, attending appropriate conferences and seminars, and reading professional literature.
  • Attends meetings and other functions; represents the library at professional committee meetings; provides information and participates in discussions regarding library activities.
  • May act as library supervisor in the absence of Supervising Librarian.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines
Education
Equivalent to a Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science or a closely related field.

Experience
Three years performing professional librarian work, preferably in a public library.
Licenses
Valid Class C California driver's license and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.
Desirable
Ability to speak, read, and write a second language (particularly Spanish); Experience in project management; Experience working with youth; Previous supervisory experience.
Special Requirement
Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
