The City of Santa Barbara Library department manages Library services at Central Library, Eastside Library, and through outreach and mobile services, and also operates a location in Montecito on behalf of the County of Santa Barbara.

THE POSITION
Santa Barbara Public Library seeks a dynamic and innovative Senior Librarian for Adult Services to oversee the Library's Adult Education initiatives, including Literacy Services for Adults and Families and SBPL Works! workforce development programs. The Senior Librarian for Adult Services is a member of the Library's supervisor team, overseeing librarians, paraprofessional staff, and grant-funded staff under direction from the Library Services Manager. The position works closely with the entire supervisor team.
Under limited supervision, the Senior Librarian plans, coordinates, and supervises the operations for the Santa Barbara Public Library (SBPL). This position manages, supervises, trains, and evaluates a team of 4-7 regular and hourly staff, who provide services in SBPL's Literacy Education for Adults and Families program and SBPLWorks! Job and career readiness program. Professional library work could include oversight, planning, quality assurance, and operational efficiency for: adult programming and services, and community education, marketing and communication, and partnership development. Other professional responsibilities may include: participation in strategic planning; public presentations; grant funding development and management; development of specialized collection(s) materials and evaluation of collection/customer needs, interests, and requests; and other work as required. The ideal candidate should have public library experience in the area of adult services or literacy services; one (1) years of supervisory experience, and experience in grant-writing and managing grant budgets. Working hours are Monday - Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Availability to work some evening and weekend hours is required. Supervisors work a rotation to ensure coverage during all open hours every day of the week. The ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desirable.
Knowledge of:Public Library services, organization, and equipment, program development, promotion, and implementation; methods and principles of supervision and leadership; methods of collection development; and general and specialized research techniques; best practices in equity, diversity, and inclusion in libraries; cultural humility and cultural competence.

Skill In: Leading professional, paraprofessional, and operational staff; establishing appropriate professional relationships; library program planning and promotion; organizing a work unit; collection development; technical reference work; using and maintaining library equipment and tools.

Ability to:
Train assigned employees in their areas of work in library methods, techniques, and in the setup and use of equipment, with a special focus on volunteer coordination, literacy and workforce development services, and library and technology instruction.
Set, communicate, track, and ensure the achievement of work group goals, including measures for productivity, quality, timeliness, accuracy, and customer service.
Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing assigned library services; implement policies and procedures. Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
Develop, plan, and administer programs and activities of adult and family literacy, workforce development, and reference and information services.
Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive patron inquiries and complaints. Serves as the building supervisor when required at multiple library locations, including solving operational and technical problems and addressing concerns and issues from the public.
Manage grant applications and reports, statistics, and outcome evaluation for assigned division.
Motivate and evaluate library personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures; work to establish and maintain a positive work environment. Direct, coordinate and review the work plan for library personnel; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities and projects; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to compose emails, letters, memos, and communicate workflows to all staff, and to review the completed work of staff; basic math to prepare statistical reports.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Desirable experience includes three (3) years of professional experience as a Librarian, including one year in a supervisory capacity. Experience in Adult Literacy field is highly desirable.

Education and/or Training: Equivalent to a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Library or Information Science or a related field.
License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements: Must possess a valid California driver's license at the time of appointment. The ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish is highly desirable, as is the ability to translate English to Spanish.
