Position Summary

The Senior Director, R&D Portfolio Management will lead a high performing Portfolio Management group within the Janssen R&D Strategy, Portfolio & Operations (SP&O) department to provide transparency and drive decision making around Janssen R&D Portfolio. Janssen R&D is an organization of 11,000 people with an operating budget of $8B, which includes JRD Therapeutic Areas (Cardiovascular/Metabolism/Retinal, Pulmonary Hypertension, Immunology, Infectious Diseases/ Vaccines, Neuroscience, Oncology) and JRD Global Functions.

Reporting to the Global Head, Janssen R&D Strategy, Portfolio & Operations (SP&O) Group, the role will be responsible for developing and providing portfolio analyses and strategic insights to proactively address senior management business questions and guide investment decisions in R&D. In partnership with the broader SP&O organization, this position supports the Global Head, Janssen R&D SP&O and other senior leaders in developing strategic frames and business cases to support senior leader decision making, including R&D Senior Leadership Team (SLT), R&D Portfolio Scientific Sub Committee, Group Operating Committee (GOC), Executive Committee (EC), Investment Committee (IC) and J&J Board of Directors (BoD).

This position will also partner closely with Finance, Therapeutic Areas & Functional Strategy and Operations Support Leaders (SOSLs) in R&D and with the Global Commercial Strategy Organization (GCSO) to facilitate discussions and provide insights for critical R&D business processes, such as Development portfolio prioritization, Portfolio Tiering, Disease Area Stronghold (DAS) strategy reviews, and Business Plan/Long Range Financial Plan (BP/LRFP) processes. Finally, this position will collaborate seamlessly across the various departments in R&D, including Global Development, Discovery & Product Development, Global Regulatory Affairs, Data Science & Digital Health to ensure that information used for decision making is accurate while minimizing organizational efforts.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Global Head, Janssen R&D Strategy, Portfolio & Operations and broader Janssen R&D SP&O team to provide transparency and insights on R&D Portfolio matters and drive proactive decision making.
  • Ensure clear and consistent communication of the Janssen R&D Portfolio accomplishments to multiple stakeholders including R&D Leadership, J&J Stakeholders & Governance Committees. Consolidate input from across the therapeutic areas and functional areas to ensure that all views are represented. Integrate input from functions in R&D and J&J outside of R&D: Innovation Centers, GCSO, Finance and others and provide a comprehensive view of R&D Portfolio accomplishments.
  • Act as a strategic partner to Janssen R&D senior management, portfolio leaders, governance committee and project teams by providing portfolio insights, judgment and an enterprise view of the portfolio to enable effective investment decision making.
• Serve as the decision support leader for the R&D Portfolio Scientific Sub Committee. Develop & communicate views of the end to end portfolio that will enable senior leaders to have a one R&D voice on Portfolio matters.

• Partner closely with Finance, Therapeutic Areas & Functional Strategy and Operations Support Leaders (SOSLs) in R&D and with the Global Commercial Strategy Organization (GCSO) to facilitate discussions and provide insights for critical R&D business processes, such as Development portfolio prioritization, Disease area strategy reviews, etc.

• Lead R&D benchmarking analytics including collection, analysis and translate insights into recommended business actions to senior leaders in digestible simple messages.

• Bring critical insights to senior leaders and investor relations Investors Relations and other Sr. Leaders for communication to the external world on portfolio, R&D productivity, and operational excellence.

• Lead the design & implementation of a scalable approaches to support R&D portfolio reporting & analysis activities.

• Implement mechanisms to enable broader organizational knowledge sharing and breaking down of siloes.

  • Gain and incorporate deep external insights on the long-term view of healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry. Expertly manage and interact with external entities such as management consulting firms and subject matter experts.
  • Develop, coach and engage direct reports, and build a diverse bench strength for the future. Proactively manage team workload and ensure all team members are optimally utilized.
  • Anticipate and lead the organization into next level of future portfolio analytics and act as a change agent in enabling the organization to improve on data capabilities including quality
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech R&D environment
  • Highly skilled strategist with proven analytical skills and affinity with complex data sets, with pharmaceutical sector experience or experience of close working with the pharmaceutical sector
  • An advanced degree in science or business discipline is required
  • Proven expertise at working within complex (preferably global) matrix environments
  • Demonstrable success as a thought-partner to senior stakeholders and a trusted advisor/challenger to business leaders is required
  • Proven track record in project & Portfolio Management and strong analytical background/data handling with business consultancy is required
  • Track record of effective and trusted partnership with internal and external stakeholders
  • Recognized as having in-depth knowledge of the R&D process and credibility within the Pharma R&D industry
  • Strong knowledge of the drug discovery and development process
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others through direct reporting and/or matrix to deliver outstanding results
  • Ability to translate data into information and strategies into executable action plans
  • Travel requirement of 10% domestic and global
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $163,000 to $282,900 .
