Reports to: Chief External Affairs Officer
General Overview:
The Knowledge House's mission is to empower and sustain a talent pipeline of technologists, entrepreneurs, and digital leaders, who will lift their communities out of poverty.
The Knowledge House (TKH) approach is to (1) close gaps in the education-to-employment pipeline in underserved communities in the Bronx NY, Newark NJ, Atlanta GA, and Los Angeles CA, neighborhoods by teaching youth and young adults the skills needed to launch careers or ventures in technology, and (2) support links between local youth, tech innovation, and business development that bring positive community impact.
Headquartered in the South Bronx, TKH has served more than 2,250 students since 2014. Current core programs include our Innovation Fellowship focused on software engineering, cybersecurity, and digital design for adult job trainees, and our Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high school students learning computational thinking and web design.

Role Overview:
The (Senior) Director of Development (DoD) will lead all institutional fundraising efforts from public funding sources and philanthropic giving from foundations and corporations and donor-advised funds. The Director will focus their energy on ensuring that TKH's current growth trajectory is maintained through securing foundation grants, strategic corporate partnerships, and giving across New York City, Atlanta, Newark, Los Angeles, and the DC/Maryland region. The Director will be the primary position responsible for prospect identification and research, solicitation, and stewardship that promotes long-term retention.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Leadership & Staff Development (35%):
  • Lead the fundraising team to exceed organizational goals and execute fundraising tactics with fidelity and quality. This includes hiring and developing staff.
  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Development & Advancement to support the Board's fundraising efforts and implementation of fundraising strategy.
  • Oversee grant management, including supervising the manager of institutional giving, and partnering with the program team to ensure accuracy and quality of proposals and reports.
  • Oversee all corporate giving relationships, supervising 1-2 staff dedicated to partnerships focused on matching TKH fellows to volunteers and employment opportunities.
  • Expand the Volunteer Impact Program and Talent Partnerships, ensuring we recruit and retain an increased number of tutors, mentors, and company referrals.
Foundations and Corporations Relations (35%):
  • Actively identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward foundation, corporate, and government-backed agencies for philanthropic gifts
  • Oversee, contribute to, and finalize compelling grant proposals that are developed in coordination with program staff, development staff, and grant writers.
  • Direct and expand all corporate relationships supervising business development partnerships as well as volunteer programs and employment opportunities.
  • Leverage our universe of corporate partnerships to build our employer networks, volunteer pool, and thought-leadership goals.
  • Partner with the Sr. Director of Advancement to identify individual prospects from our institutional partners.
Government Grants & Discretionary Funding (15%):
  • Manage relationships with relevant external partners throughout the proposal development process as well as support the ongoing identification of new grant and contract opportunities.
  • Manage public sector proposal processes in response to competitive RFPs
  • Lead the Development Team's public sector grant and contract proposal processes including writing, editing, submission, and oversight of all proposal documentation and compliance with submission requirements, ensuring a high-quality proposal.
  • Manage relationships with relevant external partners throughout the proposal development process as well as support the ongoing identification of new grant and contract opportunities.
Fundraising Strategy & Implementation (15%):
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team, contributing to TKH's strategic plan and supporting continuous improvement.
  • Inform and execute annual development plans to increase revenue from foundations, corporations, and individuals.
  • Prepare bi-weekly report/gift table for TKH leadership on development progress against goals.
  • Manage the implementation of the donor database and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing.
  • Manage fundraising and special events that help cultivate and steward existing foundation and corporate partnerships and individual donors.

Qualifications
Experience:
  • 4+ years (6+ years for Senior Director) of fundraising experience in a professional nonprofit setting
  • A track record of success leading and managing a diverse team. You love building team culture, mentoring and coaching, and helping everyone exceed their goals on deadline and grow into new levels of leadership.
  • Demonstrated track record of generating revenue from a variety of sources, including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Experience exceeding fundraising goals for a national organization with at least a $7M budget.
  • Experience cultivating internal and external constituencies and building long-term relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in CRM and communication tools including PowerPoint, Google Drive, social media, Salesforce, HubSpot, Classy, Canva, etc.
  • Prior experience in STEM, workforce development, or the education field is a plus.

  • Ability to work both independently with a minimum of supervision and effectively lead a team, including efficiently delegating tasks and monitoring staff and consultant performance.
  • Ability to travel occasionally and participate in frequent evening and weekend activities for work-related purposes.

Compensation
  • Full-time year salary: $100,000-$130,000 for Director & $125,000-$170,000 for Senior Director
