As a Senior Database Administrator II, you'll work closely with the DBA Manager to help strengthen the DBA team as a center of excellence. You will be the subject matter expert and be instrumental in driving forward improvements and building upon the existing foundations by maintaining the databases' performance, integrity, and security. It is an exciting opportunity to get involved in the early stages of team development and contribute towards its success.

We're seeking an experienced, self-motivated, and passionate MySQL engineer focused on database design, development, and administration. The individual will work closely with the Engineering and Technical Operations teams to build/deploy scalable and highly efficient implementations in our 24x7 environment. Deploying to a real-time transaction processing environment, the ideal candidate will apply a solid understanding of database design principles, indexing design strategies, and robust SQL development skills. The candidate is also expected to be a self-starter who can operate well under various situations and types of projects, ranging from a team of one to a team of many.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Commit to achieving 5 9's uptime of all OLTP production databases.
• Build HA and DR systems using multi-site clusters and replication across geo-diverse data centers.
• Proactively monitor 24x7x365 production database environment to ensure uptime.
• Perform problem resolution and root cause analysis, along with recommending and implementing preventive techniques.
• Analyze SQL query plans and leverage diagnostic tools to identify performance bottlenecks and take appropriate corrective actions to improve database performance.
• Develop, maintain, and teach database standards and best practices.
• Be the primary driver for making recommendations to improve database environments related to patching and upgrades, security, performance, and disaster recovery.
• Own and drive improvements for building and releasing scripts, tools, and processes, specifically relating to managing our databases in the cloud.
• Work with engineering teams on logical/physical database design to support new and existing application development. Maintain data models and keep them current.
• Design and develop schema, indexes, SQL queries, and stored procedures.
• Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business's Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and tested to ensure we can meet the business' Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).
• Evaluate the merits/ benefits of available system upgrades and enhancements, implement as necessary.
• Work with Engineering teams and Technical Operations in reviewing and preparing database deployments.
• Identify points of failure for Database technologies, either on-premises or in the cloud, and develop test plans to simulate the failure.
• Standardize, automate, and document the setup of development and production database environments.
• Understand and contribute to creating system support documents, operational run books, and building recipes for server configuration.
• Keep abreast of industry best practices, services, and supporting tooling.
• Provide hands-on design, development, and code reviews.
• Work as part of a team and provide after-hours support when required.

Qualifications

• A true MySQL expert that loves solving complex database problems
• 7+ years of in-depth experience as a MySQL DBA in a high-volume, high-impact transactional environment.
• Expert knowledge of MySQL architecture – engine, query processing, query optimization, locking, etc.
• Considerable experience with replication and active-active environments is required.
• Experience automating the execution and notification of database-related processes and alerts.
• Strong knowledge of administering, designing, and deploying MySQL databases in AWS and GCP.
• Team player who works hard and plays hard.
• Attentive to detail with a relentless focus on accuracy.
• Strong knowledge of MySQL migrations and upgrades.
• Proficient in writing and optimizing SQL statements.
• Experience administrating PostgreSQL is a strong plus.
• Strong experience with infrastructure as code principles (repeatable, scalable, resilient).
• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills .
