About the Opportunity
Job Summary
Northeastern University’s Planning, Real Estate and Facilities (PREF) division is seeking a Capital Renewal-oriented Senior Campus Planner to join a talented team of planners, architects, and designers at a dynamic, top tier, urban research university.

The mission of PREF is to shape and care for Northeastern University’s physical environment in support of learning and discovery. Under the direction of the Director of Campus Planning, the Campus PlannerCapital Renewal will play a crucial role in strategically addressing Capital Renewal of university buildings and infrastructure within the campus master plan. This position requires a deep understanding of facilities conditions, lifecycle, costing, and a proactive approach to deferred maintenance planning with the goal of enhancing the longevity of campus facilities and ensuring a safe and function environment for all.

The Senior Campus PlannerCapital Renewal is a new position devoted to the prioritization of long-range Capital Renewal and planning needs that align and support Northeastern’s campus master plan, other long-range planning initiatives, and capital projects. The Campus PlannerCapital Renewal will lead planning studies, either done in-house or through the management of external consultants and collaborate with other planners and staff in PREF to develop short- and long-term solutions to existing and anticipated deferred maintenance needs in Northeastern’s expanding global campus network. The position will collaborate closely with other members in PREF within Operations, Capital Projects, and the Climate Justice & Sustainability Hub and be expected to operate with a high degree of independence and initiative.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and 4-6 years of professional experience in Architecture, Engineering, Facilities Management, Urban Planning, or a closely related field. Experience in facilities management, maintenance planning, or a similar role.
  • Knowledge of building systems, construction, and Capital Renewal best practices.
  • Experience managing and working with large amounts of data.
  • Experience and comfort leveraging computerized maintenance management systems such as Archibus, e-Builder, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with budgeting, capital planning, and cost estimation tools.
  • Knowledge of sustainability principles and their application in facility management.
  • Experience in project management and comfort in working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comfort to communicate in written, verbal, and graphic form.
  • Ability, willingness, and comfort working with people from various backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, linguistic styles, and socio-economic status.
  • Ability, willingness, or experience managing interns or co-op students.
Key Responsibilities
Process & Study Management (30%)
  • Manage comprehensive assessments of campus facilities to identify and collaborate with PREF staff on Capital Renewal issues in Boston and select global locations.
  • Draft RFPs, scope of work, and facilitate processes related to hiring consultants as it relates to Capital Renewal planning.
  • Liaise with and manage external consultants to work on various Northeastern Capital Renewal planning efforts.
  • Develop and present scenarios to support facilities management and inform decisions regarding Capital Renewal strategies.
Data Management & Maintenance (30%)
  • Maintain detailed records of facilities conditions, large scale maintenance activities, and project outcomes.
  • Manage and track large amounts of data to identify, rank, and develop options for senior leadership prioritization of Capital Renewal needs.
  • Generate regular reports on the progress of deferred maintenance initiatives.
Collaboration & Communication (30%)
  • Collaborate with facilities management, maintenance teams, capital projects teams to develop short-term and long-term maintenance options.
  • Craft clear and compelling narratives, in the form of presentations and other visual communication methods that distill deferred maintenance planning process, scenarios and recommendations.
  • Conduct presentations to PREF leadership, NU community, external partners and organizations, government agencies, and elected officials.
