Senior Campus Planner

As one the most comprehensive art museums in the world, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA) has undergone considerable expansion and change over the years. Recent projects include the opening of the Art of the Americas Wing in 2010, the transformation of the West Wing of the Museum into the Linde Family Wing for Contemporary Art in 2011; the reinstallation of the Islamic Art galleries in 2019; the Greek and Roman galleries, the new Conservation Center, and the new Center for Netherlandish Art in 2021. In addition, there are always ongoing new and gallery renovation projects throughout the Museum as well as spaces for working, learning, dining and entertainment. Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Facilities, Capital Planning, and Real Estate, the Senior Campus Planner will facilitate Museum-wide planning initiatives to optimize our space and building infrastructure in support of the Museum's strategic goals. This is a forward-thinking, creative professional who excels at managing projects in a fast-paced environment with internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions:

Study Management:

• This position works directly with the Senior Director to facilitate the completion of planning studies related to long-term strategic planning, long-term renewal planning,and shorter term capital project planning.
• Uses organization and quality control skills to manage efforts according to a budget and timeline. Develops processes to keep stakeholders engaged and informed.
• Translates and presents findings to enable decision making.
• Some studies will be completed in-house and some will require the services of external consulting. The Senior Campus Planner will develop RFQ/RFPs and participate in the selection of consultants.

Programming and Space Planning:

• Tracks space planning requests, advises on alignment with broad strategic goals, and seeks opportunities for efficiencies.
• Responsible for pre-project planning including program development, test fits, application of space allocation metrics, preliminary cost estimates, identification of initial code and zoning requirements, schedule, enabling constraints, and campus impact.
• Develops space planning related guidelines and provides support with equipment/furniture planning, move planning, finish selection, and other services that may be needed for the implementation of capital projects.
• Utilizes problem-solving skills and has the ability to develop multiple feasible options.

Space and Data Management:

• Maintains up-to-date space plans and space management tools to provide an inventory of all museum spaces.
• Prepares reports and presentations in graphic and tabular formats to aid decision making.
• Works with project teams on room numbering and close-out documentation.

Stewardship:

• Participates in the development and implementation of the multi-year capital plan, including projects related to deferred maintenance and capital renewal.
• Tracks recommendations from the Facilities Condition Assessment to inform priorities in the capital plan.
• Manages climate action initiatives related to decarbonization, resiliency, and other programs and regulations related to sustainability.
• Stays current with trends, modern technologies, and grant opportunities related to facilities management and sustainability.

• Assists in the development of architectural, construction, and interior design standards, guidelines and specifications that are consistent with the Museum’s strategic goals.

Requirements and Characteristics:

• Genuine curiosity about how our built environment impacts and informs the experience of all who enter the MFA.
• Undergraduate degree in architecture, planning, engineering, facilities management, or a closely related field.
• Minimum 8 years’ experience in managing planning and/or capital projects, preferably at high profile institution(s).
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to illustrate complex concepts graphically.
• Understanding of general space planning and programming principles.
• Embraces sustainable and universal design approaches in all planning efforts.
• Ability to develop high level project budgets and timelines. Experience with estimating and benchmarking is preferred.
• Ability to work independently and work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
• Must be a diplomatic, service-oriented professional with the ability to collaborate with internal and external constituents. Ability to manage expectations and speak up about risks or potential opportunities.
• Welcomes collaboration with a diverse workforce and population and values differences in backgrounds and thinking. Must be a supportive ally in support of the Museum’s efforts and commitment to IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, access) values.
• Proficiency with Autodesk products, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with data analytic tools and facilities management systems preferred.
• Knowledge of building systems, construction best practices, local building codes, accessibility guidelines, and related regulations. Understanding of zoning and municipality ordinances a plus.
• Desire to mentor an intern and other team members on planning principles.

Salary Range and Schedule:

Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week

$115,000 - $135,000
