This position is located on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, New York. You will be expected to work on the Ithaca campus, although you may be permitted to perform a portion of your work remotely.

No Visa sponsorship available for this position.

Who we are:

Located in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University is a bold, innovative, inclusive, and dynamic teaching and research university where staff, faculty, and students alike are challenged to make an enduring contribution to the betterment of humanity. Cornell University is one of the largest and most diverse institutions in the Ivy League. We are a community of 22,000 students and more than 10,000 faculty and staff members representing more than 80 countries and hundreds of disciplines—global cultures, backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and ideas.

The Office of the Bursar is the central university billing department responsible for managing tuition, fees, and other charges incurred by students, both current and former. Within this office, the Loan Servicing and Collections department is responsible for working with outside agencies to service all university and Federal Perkins loans and collect all outstanding Bursar and Cornell Card accounts.

Operating in close coordination with the Bursar Account Services (BAS) team, the Loan Servicing and Collections department addresses a spectrum of concerns affecting current student, alumni, and their families. The concerns may span financial aid, housing, dining services, student health plans, and other pertinent areas. The paramount objective of the Loan Servicing and Collections department is to ensure the provision of exceptional service standards while following all Federal, State, and university policies and regulations to collect owed funds to the university. The concerted effort aims to optimize the return of funds to the University’s loan portfolios.

The Senior Account Representative will:

  • Ensure the completeness and accuracy of all transactions in the general ledger.
  • Create and post journal entries into the General Ledger Accounts, ensuring proper classification.
  • Assist the collection agencies with accounts receivable, communicate with borrowers, and negotiate settlements and payoffs on past-due accounts and loans.
  • Assist the manager with loan fund management and aging delinquency inventory.
  • Review and validate vendor invoices to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with contractual terms.
  • Participate in highly critical and time-sensitive tasks that require exceptional organization and time management skills. Prioritize activities to meet deadlines.
  • Complete yearly AOR & FISAP report for the department. Ensure accurate and timely submission of financial data to regulatory authorities.
  • Review and evaluate university loans, and delinquent student billing receivables. Analyze trends and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Coordinate and manage the process for Student Loan Exit Interviews. Provide guidance to borrowers and ensure completion of documentation.
  • Answer emails and phone calls from students, families, vendors, and other Cornell departments. Provide prompt and professional assistance and resolve inquiries effectively.
  • Complete the Cornell University accounting certificate within 1 year of employment. Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and continuous learning.

The Senior Account Representative for the Loan Servicing and Collections team will serve as the principal backup to the Loan Servicing and Collections Manager. The role encompasses ensuring the smooth operation of the team during the Manager’s absence, thereby upholding the efficiency and effectiveness of the department functions.

While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences; being cooperative, collaborative, open, and welcoming; showing respect, compassion, and empathy; engaging and supporting others regardless of background or perspective; speaking up when others are being excluded or treated inappropriately; and supporting work/life integration of oneself and others.

Who you are:
You have experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being, and are passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and well-being. As an individual contributor, you will possess the ability to prioritize duties with a self-motivated approach to work, under general supervision. You have a positive attitude and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, as the ability to be diplomatic and tactful in communications with students, their families and others is frequent and important in this role. Strong multitasking abilities, comfortability working in a fast-paced environment where change is frequent and the ability to think holistically about problems and identify process improvements to management are also requirements of the position.

Other required qualifications include:

  • Associate degree in finance, or accounting and at least 4 years’ experience in loan servicing, bankruptcy, and/or collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making/problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word.

Other qualifications, preferred but not required for the position, include:

  • Familiarity with Cornell's internal accounting system.
  • Experience with the higher education environment.
  • Experience managing vendor relationships.
  • Experience with federal student loans, including default resolution and bankruptcy proceedings, would be beneficial.
