Security Police Officer I
PER FPB Policy FBP-HR-PRO-00001: Internal employees must be in current position for (1) year or greater to be eligible to apply.
Position Overview
The Security Police Officer (SPO) Overall Responsibilities: Protect Special Nuclear Material, classified matter, personnel or persons, and/or Government property against unauthorized access, theft, and intentional damage/harm. Appropriately respond to and act accordingly against security and emergency events that occur on site. SPOs ensure that Department of Energy's (DOE) mission requirements are met. The SPO I must meet the following requirements:
  • The following qualifications must be completed prior to a position interview:
  • Complete an initial one mile qualification run with a maximum qualifying time of 8 minutes 30 seconds;
  • Complete an initial qualification 40-yard dash from the prone position in 8.5 seconds or less;
  • After initial qualification, maintain the ability to run one-half mile with a maximum qualifying time of 4 minutes 40 seconds, and a 40-yard dash from the prone position in 8.5 seconds or less;
  • Must have or complete, the DOE's Basic Security Police Officer Training (BSPOT) or Tactical Response Force (TRF) 100 course;
  • Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warmup;
  • Must meet the applicable DOE firearms qualification or proficiency standards every six months under daylight and reduced lighting conditions;
  • Must demonstrate an ability to meet the DOE firearms qualification or proficiency standard(s) and/or fitness requirements during a DOE Headquarters field audit, survey, inspection, or other situation directed by the local Officially Designated Federal Security Authority (ODFSA);
  • Must be able to understand tactical operations training, to include individual and small unit tactics;
  • Must be able to understand and implement departmental and site policies and procedures governing post and patrol operations, access control, and site protection;
  • Understand and implement inspection techniques for persons, packages and vehicles, detect and identify controlled and prohibited articles;
  • Must have or obtain a valid HSPD-12 Security Badge and a compliant state driver's license;
  • Safely operate motor vehicles when use is required by local missions and duty assignments;
  • Rely on the senses of smell, sight, hearing and touch to: detect the odor of products of combustion; detect prohibited articles; inspect persons, packages and vehicles; and determine the nature of emergencies; maintain personal safety; and report the nature of emergencies;
  • Apply basic tactics (to include use of intermediate force weapons) to engage and neutralize armed adversaries;
  • Use site-specific hand held equipment and weapons required for the performance of duties;
  • While armed and authorized to use deadly force, perform complex tasks, make life or death and other critical decisions, and take appropriate actions under confusing, stressful conditions including potentially life-threatening environments throughout the duration of emergency situations;
  • Properly utilize personal duty equipment;
  • Perform physically demanding work under adverse weather and temperature conditions (extreme heat and extreme cold) on slippery or hazardous surfaces with the prolonged use of protective equipment and garments such as bullet-resistant garments, as required by site protection strategies;
  • Have no known significant abnormal intolerance to chemical, mechanical (e.g., heat, light or water), and other physical agent exposures to the skin that may be encountered during routine and emergency duties, as specified at the site;
  • Staff security posts which normally require movement on foot or by vehicle, in response to alarms and any breach of security; and to support DOE protection strategies;
  • Otherwise act as needed to protect Government property, personnel, classified information, and Special Nuclear Material (SNM), to apprehend suspects, and to participate in the armed defense of a DOE site against a violent assault by adversaries;
  • Complete and pass initial medical screening to include psychological examination, vision test, hearing test, drug screening and all other requirements identified in the 10 CFR 1046;
  • Effectively executes the duties described in Post and General Orders and/or other security procedures provided.
  • Performs work safely, in accordance with established policies.

Required Contingencies:

  • The ability to obtain/maintain "L" or "Q" Clearance one year from hire date
  • Background Check
  • Any site required training

Required Skills
  • Must be a citizen of the United States of America
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must have a High School diploma or its equivalent.
  • Ability to run one-half mile with a maximum qualifying time of 4 minutes 40 seconds, and a 40-yard dash from the prone position in 8.5 seconds or less;
  • Department of Defense experience, (any branch of service or MOS)
  • Certified law enforcement experience
  • Must possess a valid operator's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q security clearance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient PC skills including Microsoft software

Required Experience
Minimum Requirements
  • A college degree in a related field (Criminal Justice or Security)
  • Federal or State corrections officers
  • Department of Defense (Military not Civilian) experience
  • Certified law enforcement experience
  • DOE BSPOT or TRF certification
